Roman amphora handle sherd. Round in section with a slightly raised central longitudinal rib. Oxidised buff fabric. Inclusions of golden mica, common ill-sorted angular and sub-rounded white quartz (c.0.2-3.5mm with some of the larger fragments perhaps being feldspar), sparse brown and black rock fragments (0.5-3.3mm), and bright red-orange clay? (0.5-3.0mm). Handle (just below shoulder) width c.52mm & thickness c.50mm, weight 621.2g.

Medieval earthenware jug handle & rim sherd. Strap handle with stabbed hole decoration (the holes penetrate from top to bottom of the handle). Upright rim flat on top. Green-yellow external glaze. Coarse buff fabric with orange outer surfaces, common quartz inclusions (c.0.6mm-3mm) and sparse non-crystalline red ?clay inclusions. Diameter of rim uncertain, width & thickness of handle at break 36mm x 16mm. Weight 83.0g.
Green moss on this sherd show it has been in the open air for some time.

One piece of earthenware kiln (or possibly furnace) lining, & one piece of slate that has apparently been in a kiln or furnace.
1. Fragment of kiln/furnace lining; coarse orange earthenware with numerous cream inclusions & streaks; the inner surface is vitrified dark metallic brown for a thickness of up to 5mm. The outer surface is missing, the surviving maximum thickness of the wall is 22mm. Weight 23.37g.

The fabrics of the rims and body sherds are very similar, but they could possibly be differentiated as follows:

Medieval earthenware jug handle fragment. Top of thumbed-on strap handle, sub-rectangular sectioned, with some traces of thick green-brown glaze on left side and underside. The jug would have been partially glazed only, with the glaze having perhaps run down from the rim. Pale buff fabric, abundant rounded non-crystalline red, black & cream inclusions, some quartz sands, sparse larger angular white non-crystalline inclusions. Speckled appearance due to black & red inclusions, slightly soapy feel. Oxidised fired. Possibly Brackenfield pottery. Weight 55.76g.
