A conical, cast lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1, probably of Roman or Early Medieval date, about AD 43 - 1000. The whorl is undecorated and has a light cream patina. It is 20.5mm in diameter and 9.1mm thick with a central, oval perforation of internal diameter 4.2mmm. It weighs  14.7g. Spindle whorls of this type are illustrated in Walton Rogers, 2007, Cloth and Clothing in early Anglo-Saxon England, page 25. Form A1 whorls are thought to date from AD 500 - 1000, but the size of the central hole suggests a Roman da…

A cast lead artefact, probably an ingot made to conveniently consolidate waste lead for re-working, possibly of Medieval or Post-medieval date, about AD 1100 - 1800. It is drop-shaped in plan, with a flat base and a convex upper surface making it D shaped in cross-section. There are no mouldings, but there is a small, rectangular depression in the upper side at the pointed end of the teardrop, which does not penetrate completely through the object. There is a scratched asterix or star on the reverse. The object has a light grey patina. It is 53.8mm long, 32.1mm wide and 14.8m…

13 pieces of lead of uncertain purpose or date, weighing 967 g. Several pieces have folded over edges, some have raised lines of rope-like decoration. The largest fragment has a 3 cm thick cylindrical projection, apparently solid, on one section. The fragments are likely vessel fragments, not necessarily from the same discrete vessel.  Weight: 967 g Possibly similar examples recorded on the PAS database are WAW-EDD262 and LEIC-EC640E.

A complete hollow gold bead of uncertain dating, probably Post Medieval to Modern (AD 1800 to AD 1900). The bead is spherical. Several small sub triangular depressions are present around the mid point, possibly teeth marks. A circular perforation, with an internal diameter of 1.3 mm is present top and bottom.  It has a diameter of 7.1 mm and is 7.0 mm long. It weighs 0.6 g. The bead is a mid yellow colour, with an even patina. The bead is non-diagnostic for earlier periods, so it can not be proved to be older than 300 years. Therefore it falls outside of the requirements of th…

An amber coloured glass/stone round bead, encircled with a strip of lead, which attaches to another piece, now missing, and would appear to have formed the figure of eight. The intact section shows no evidence of having being attached to another element at its other end. it is possible that the broken lead strip, from the second element, has meant the loss of another bead. It is possibly some decorative edging from a item of household furnishing, or similar. Overall length 21.4 mm, length of intact section 14.3 mm, width 13.1 mm, thickness 10.2 mm and weight 4.59 g.

A complete lead weight, likely a net or loom weight, dating from the Roman to the post medieval periods (c AD 43 - 1700). The weight is cylindrical in shape with a central channel which is also circular, this is set slightly off centre. External surface smooth and unblemished.  Lead weights are difficult to date securely or assign to specific tasks without archaeological context, as they change very little and thus a wide date range is suggested. The form of these weights has been suggested as reflecting those utilised for fishing or as net sinkers, though thi…

A damaged disc of lead alloy of uncertain date. The object has a raised rim with indented decoration, possibly lettering, the pattern can not be clearly seen due to wear and damage. In the centre of the disk is a raised pellet 4mm diameter; this does not show on the reverse so appears to be a decorative feature rather than an attachment rivet. On the reverse there appears to be a linear mark running across the diameter, which may represent some soldered feature such as a pin or hinge. This is uncertain because of damage. The object is broken more or less in half by a ja…
