Complete, wheel-thrown, Roman vessel dating 42-410AD. The small jar is a closed form with a simple rim and is made from a buff or pale orange coloured, micaceous fabric which has been covered with a thin red slip on the internal and external surfaces. Possibly an example of Cheshire Plains ware (Webster 1991). The base of the vessel is flat and has distinctive wire marks where a wire, or cord has been used to remove the vessel from the wheel. The vessel is undecorated. The scratches on the inside of the vessel are almost certainly the result of the vessel having been cleaned. …

This rim fragment may be from a type of cooking vessel. It is uncertain what type of vessel, but Egan (1998) comments that commonly used cooking vessels in the Medieval period include skillets, ewers, and cauldrons. Butler, Green and Payne (2009) comment that rim fragments which are found as individual fragments are likely to be from cauldrons or posnets. These vessels are in use from c1100 until c1850 when cast iron cooking vessels are used instead. Late Iron Age or Roman copper alloy zoomorphic mount, probably from a vessel The mount appears to be complete or near-complete (with an overall length of 58.7mm and a weight of 47.4g) and depicts a beast, probably a dog but possibly a pig cast in the round. The beast's snout is concave and would appear to be too elongated for a pig. The end of the snout appears to have two circular depressions depicting the nostrils. The mouth of the beast is biting on a piece of ferrous plate on one side, possibly the rim of a vessel. The plate does not extend to the opposite side. The eyes are …

The handle is represented by the area from within the lug and one of the diverging arms. The broken end of the hinge indicates that the missing arm would have diverged at a similar angle. The outside end of the handle is absent. The attachment lug is irregu…

Cast copper alloy Roman vessel mount or escutcheon in the form of a bull's or ox's head. It is in very worn condition and is incomplete. Remains of flange on the top of the head would have supported a loop. The horns are present. Faint moulding on the front of the face suggests features including eyes and snout. The back is hollow and is partially filled with an unidentified whitish material. At the centre is a copper alloy(?) rivet or fixing stud.
