Incomplete cast copper alloy double looped buckle of probable post-medieval date (1550-1650). The buckle frame is complete and is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with a slight integrally cast central bar to which a pin would have been attached. The pin is lost but would have been attached to the central bar by the terminal being folded back upon itself. There is no evidence for a recessed pin rest on the frame. The frame of the buckle is decorated with a series of cast recessed lines positioned either side of the central bar and at the mid point of the loop. The decoration is limited t…

Cast copper alloy buckle with drilled frame of late post-medieval date (1690-1720). The buckle frame is complete and is broadly sub-rectangular in plan. In profile it is bowed / arched. The central bar is lost although originally it would have fitted through two drilled hole in the frame. It is likely to have been made of iron. The pin is also missing and there is no evidence of recessed pin rests on the frame. The frame of the buckle is decorated with a series of incised and cast designs, which are formed from diagonal and horizontal lines. The reverse of the buckle is plain and undec…

Incomplete cast copper alloy annular buckle with central bar (sometimes known as a double looped buckle) of later medieval date (1350-1500). The frame of the buckle is complete being broadly sub-circular in plan with an irregular sub-rectangular cross section. The edges of the brooch are faceted and filed with heavy diagonal strokes (these are best observed on the reverse. An integrally cast bar divides the buckle evenly into two parts, this axis bar has am iron concretion attached to it, presumably the remains of a broken iron pin. The iron corrosion has stained much of the lower part…

Cast copper alloy fragment from a large buckle probably with a drilled frame of late post-medieval date (1690-1770). The buckle frame is broken in two places; both breaks are relatively fresh and modern. The buckle is therefore irregular, but probably originally sub-rectangular. It is D shaped in cross section with faceted edges on the upper face; the reverse is flat and undecorated. On the inner edge of the fragment are two curvi-linear raised moulded decorated sworls. These sit either side of a worn area, probably the pin rest. The buckle is a dark green colour with a polished pa…

It is D shaped in cross section with faceted edges on the upper face; the reverse is flat and undecorated. On the outer edge of the frame are a series of cast floral sworls and flowers. Complete cast lead alloy (pewter?) buckle of post-medieval date (1660-1720). The frame of the buckle is sub-rectangular (rectangular with rounded corners) in plan with two central drilled holes to which an iron (assumed from encased orange corrosion product adhering to the inner surface of the frame) axis bar (not present) would have fixed. The pin which would have fitted to this bar is also missing. In profile the frame is slightly bowed. Centrally positioned at either end of the frame are two moulded pin rests, these are decorated with horizontal cast lines, or half moulded ribs. In …

Cast copper alloy single looped buckle of probable early medieval or medieval date, c. 1000 - 1200 AD. The buckle frame is sub-circular (oval D shape) in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. The pin is missing but it is likely that it would have been formed from a sub-rectangular length of copper alloy. There is no pin rest present or constriction on the frame to enable the pin to lie flat. Where the axis bar meets the edge of the frame are two small projections, it is likely that the axis bar fitted onto a rectangular shaped plate formed from a sheet of copper alloy. The plate …

A cast copper alloy buckle of post-medieval date (1690-1720). The frame of the buckle is sub-rectangular in plan with two central drilled holes to which a copper alloy chape is fixed; from the abundant iron corrosion the drilled pin on which the chape fits is formed of iron. In profile the frame is slightly bowed. There is no evidence of a pin rest on the frame. There is also no decoration. The buckle is mid silvery grey green colour, which may suggest that it had been tinned. Similar copper alloy examples to this buckle can be seen in Ross Whitehead's book 'Buckles 1250 - 1800', page…

The buckle frame and chape are mid green in colour, with some rust stains. The frame is 28.2mm long, 22.2mm wide and 3.8mm thick. The chape is 24.8mm long and 1.3mm thick (ignoring the stud).
