A Mesolithic flint micro-scraper on a flake, sometimes referred to as thumbnail scrapers. The flake is short, rounded and convex. The tool is 18.6 mm from proximal to distal end and 22.5 mm wide from lateral edge to lateral edge. The striking platform is clearly visible at the butt as is the bulb of percussion and bulb scar. Cortex remains at the proximal end. The distal end has semi-abrubpt retouch which extends around the flake along both lateral sides. The flint is dark grey to brown in colour apart from the area of cortex at the butt which is a pale brown in colour. Scrapers are…

Object type: SIDE SCRAPER
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint side scraper on a blade. The blade has abrupt and semi-abrupt retouch down the right lateral edge (when held with the dorsal side facing). It also has abrupt retouch on the left edge near to the butt, probably to facilitate comfortable handling of the tool during use. Slight retouch at the distal end of the blade may suggest that this end was utilised as a tool also. The flint is of a pale grey to white colour. The blade measures 28.1 mm long, 13.7 mm wide, 5.8 mm thick and weighs 1.7 grams. It is lozenge shaped in section.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint flake, retouched to form a scraper. The flint is almost entirely cortical, with only the butt of the proximal end and an area of retouch on each lateral edge exposing the dark grey interior of the flint. The cortex is ochre to white in colour. At the butt the striking platform and bulb scars show clearly where the flake was struck. Retouch on the right lateral edge (when the flint is held with the dorsal side facing) was probably intended to form a scraping edge. The abrupt retouch on the opposite lateral edge may have been intended to blunt the edge and make it easi…

A Mesolithic notched flake. The notch is on the right lateral edge of the flake when held with the dorsal side facing. The notch was created using semi-abrubt retouch from the dorsal face. Additional working at the butt of the flake is most likely to be associated with platform preparation of the core ahead of knapping and what are probably bulb scars are visible here also. Notched flakes are common finds at Mesolithic sites. These are thought to have had a specific function and were possibly used in the manufacture and fine shaping of arrow shafts for hunting (Butler 2005, 112). T…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint notched flake. The flake has been retouched with a deliberate notch on the right lateral edge (when the flake is held with the dorsal side facing). The notch appears to have been created with two percussive blows from the ventral surface. There is limited retouch on the left lateral edge of the distal end also. The flint appears to have been snapped at the distal end, and based on the patina of the flint this appears to be an ancient break. Whether this break was deliberate or accidental is difficult to discern, though the distal edge has not been truncated with reto…

A Mesolithic flint notched flake. The bulb of percussion, striking platform and bulb scar are all visible at the proximal end of the flake where it has been struck from a core. The flake is approximately two thirds cortical on its dorsal surface, with only the left side free of cortex. It is this side, approximately mid-way down the left lateral edge of the flake, where a notch has been removed with a blow from the ventral face. This flake may have been selected to form such a tool because the residual cortex would allow the tool to be held comfortably. The distal end of the flake appe…

A Mesolithic flake, retouched at the distal end to form a truncated piece. The truncation is oblique and transverse, applied to the right side of the distal end from the ventral surface. The bulb of percussion ans striking platform are clearly visible at the proximal end. The flint is dark to pale grey in colour, measuring 32.8 mm in length, 15.7 mm in width, 3.05 mm thick and 1.6 grams in weight. The function of truncated pieces is not certain, although they are commonly found in Mesolithic assemblages. Such pieces may have been utilised as tools in their own right, or may have been …

A Mesolithic flint notched flake. The flake is secondary and retains a small amount of cortex on its right lateral edge on the dorsal surface. There are negative flake scars on the dorsal surface along with cresting evidence for platform preparation. The bulb of percussion and bulb scar are visible on the ventral surface. A Mesolithic notched flake. The notch is on the left lateral edge of the flake when held with the dorsal side facing. The notch was created with a blow from the dorsal surface and followed up by retouch from the same side. There is also evidence for retouch at the distal end of the flake. This may have allowed the flake to be used as a scraper as well as a notched tool, though it would also have made the flake more comfortable to hold whilst the notched section was being used. The flake is approximately one third cortical, with most of the cortex at the proximal end on the dorsal s…

A burnt stone used for cooking. It is a rounded pebble of red granite, clearly subjected to fairly intense heat as it is covered with cracks. Normally such objects are largely undatable, however, given that this was found in the general area from which a number of flints of Mesolithic date have been found, there is a strong possibility that this stone was utilised during the Mesolithic period.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint artefact, probably a microlith. The tool is formed from a broken bladelet. The oblique edge at the break may suggest that the bladelet was broken using the microburin technique, where the bladelet is broken down into separate parts by introducing a notch, removing the proximal end. Brown discolouration of the flint at the left edge of the ventral surface (if ventral surface is facing) may indicate burning, perhaps as part of the microlith production process. There is slight retouch along the right lateral edge (dorsal side facing) although the left edge appe…

A Mesolithic flint microlith formed from a broken bladelet, probably using the microburin technique. The microlith is triangular in shape and trapezoidal in section. There is abrubt retouch along the left lateral edge, creating a blunt edge (this edge was perhaps slotted into an organic shaft or handle). The opposite edge has some further retouch applied by pressure flaking from the dorsal surface. The butt is square. The flint ranges from pale grey/cream to a darker grey in colour. It measures 22.04 mm long, 7.47 mm wide, 2.74 mm thick and weighs 0.3 grams.

A Mesolithic flint microlith formed from a broken bladelet. The microlith is triangular in shape and has a flat butt formed at the break. The left lateral edge has abrubt retouch which forms a blunt edge, perhaps to facilitate slotting the point into a shaft. The right edge is naturally sharp and appears not to have been retouched. The implement is sub-trapezoidal in section. It measures 10.62 mm in length, 5.57 mm wide, 1.84 mm thick and weighs 0.1 gram. The flint is a mottled dark grey in colour.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint tool formed from a broken bladelet. The bladelet has been snapped at both ends. Difference in the patination of the external flint and the internal flint revealed at the breaks suggest that these breaks may have been post-depositional, perhaps having occurred during plough action. Fine retouch occurs along the left lateral edge of the bladelet (when held with dorsal side facing). This has been achieved through pressure flaking, both from the dorsal and ventral faces. This row of retouch occurs along the whole side of what remains of this edge, giving the tool a faint…

A Mesolithic tool on a broken bladelet, probably a microdenticulate. The right lateral edge has fine retouch applied from the ventral face along the whole of its length. Retouch on the opposite lateral edge is confined to a small notch taken from the centre of the edge, once again applied from the ventral face. The flint is of a dark grey to light grey colour. The bladelet is trapezoidal in section. It measures 16.2 mm in length, 10.4 mm in width, 3.8 mm thick and weighs 0.7 grams.
