Object type: BRICK
Broad period: ROMAN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Regular mud-stone nodule used and shaped into a brick (ceramic building material) of probable Roman date (100-350 AD). The nodule is a similar size to the other examples (HESH-EA0F18 ) and found at the same site. It is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. It is formed from a fine grained silt or mud stone which is mica rich. It is a uniform grey colour with a slightly powdery surface. There is evidence of mortar or other similar compound on both the upper and lower faces of the nodule suggesting it had been used in a wall or building. The mortar has decayed to a mid-…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but damaged knapped, ground and polished axe-head of probable later Neolithic date (2900-2100 BC). The axe is knapped from a mid grey buff volcanic tuff. This rock type is formed from compressed volcanic ash and has a fine grained composition with infrequent crystalline inclusions. Tuff is found in Britain and Ireland in a band that runs down the Irish Sea from the Lake District (the Langdale's source Group VI), County Antrim (Ireland), through North Wales (Graig Lwyd Group VII), and into Cornwall and Devon (Groups XVI and IV respectively). Volcanic tuff is similar to flint…

Incomplete cast copper alloy double looped buckle of probable post-medieval date (1550-1650). The buckle frame is complete and is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with a slight integrally cast central bar to which a pin would have been attached. The pin is lost but would have been attached to the central bar by the terminal being folded back upon itself. There is no evidence for a recessed pin rest on the frame. The frame of the buckle is decorated with a series of cast recessed lines positioned either side of the central bar and at the mid point of the loop. The decoration is limited t…

The outer face of the sherd has been glazed with a mottled mid green brown coloured glaze which has decayed and is laminating The breaks are all worn and abraded. Cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is irregular in plan and domed (convex) in profile; the edges are beveled / faceted. The overall decorative design consists of two lobed terminals connected by a flat rectangular bar. The terminals are likely to have been decorated with scallop shells however all detail has been lost through a combination of corrosion and abrasion. There is no evidence of an applied surface on either the upper face or lower faces. The reverse face of the fitting is irregular but broadly flat and u…

Incomplete copper alloy two-piece Colchester derivative (Dolphin) bow brooch of Roman date (43-150AD). The wings are semi-cylindrical with perforated wing / end caps. Cast copper alloy fragment from a vessel, dish or plate of probable late medieval or post medieval date (1400-1700 AD). Only a small fragment survives of a large circular or oval plate. It is irregular in plan and broadly sub-rectangular in cross section. The edge of the plate is bevelled and the other three edges are all broken. The breaks are relatively fresh – suggesting relatively modern damage. There is no decoration present, however the outer edge is heavily corroded and has a black carbon stained appearance. Small irregular cast copper alloy fragment, probably from either a chafing dish or small metal vessel of later medieval or post medieval date (1400-1600). Cast copper alloy furniture (box) fitting of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The fitting is irregular in plan and D shaped in cross section; the edges are beveled / faceted. Although originally cast flat the fitting has been bent at 90° in the middle so that it can fit onto a box, chest or piece of furniture. The bent elbow of the fitting is well achieved and deliberately thickened at this point to give extra support. The fitting tapers along its length to a pointed terminal. Irregular copper alloy bar with two broken and abraded terminals. This may be the remains of a composite set of balance scales, being one fragment of an arm balance. The bar is broadly cylindrical in shape, being slightly faceted on several of the faces. Both terminals are shaped with a series of irregular notches, presumably these notches are functional, wither to support small chains to suspend weighing pans or to aid the joining of two pieces of metal together with solder. The sides of the bar are notched slightly in several places and the outer edge of both sides is decorated with …
