Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy harness fitting / mount of probable later post medieval date (1600-1700). The mount would have originally been sub circular in plan with an incomplete rectangular attachment loop at one edge. The upper part of this fitting has been lost. In profile the mount is domed; convex or C shaped in cross section. The mount measures 37.6mm length, 38.9mm width is 15.2mm high and formed from metal 2.1mm thick. It weighs 12.22 grams. The mount is decorated with a series of cast and (possibly) pierced patterns. The central design is on the dome which has a central ir…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete post medieval (1500-1620) cast lead alloy (pewter) pin. The fragment consists of a sub-spherical decorated pin head (terminal). A small oval shaped scar is present on the underside of the pinhead. This is the point where the pin shaft would have joined the head. This damage is relatively old as a patina has developed over the break. It is highly likely that the pin head is hollow, being formed from two parts joined by solder, the pin shaft would have been attached through a oval slot in the lower half. A clear longitudinal seam can be seen at the mid point of the head. Th…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MODERN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete heraldic mount provisionally dated to the early modern period 1650-1850. The mount is formed in two parts: the back plate is a very poor cast copper alloy amalgam which contains a considerable amount of lead alloy (evident in the grey corrosion product and typified by flakey laminated corrosion). The front plate is formed from a heavily incised and relatively thick silver sheet. The sheet has been fixed to the back plate by a combination of crimping and probably solder. The overall design on the front face is that of a gated tower or turret, the base of which sits on a twist…

Object type: HAMMER
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Stone pebble hammer / macehead of probable prehistoric, specifically Mesolithic – Bronze Age, date 6500BC – 2000BC. The pebble hammer is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and profile. The pebble is either a calcareous-sandstone or possibly a calcareous-limestone. It has been water worn – so the procurement source is presumably either riverine or possibly glacial. It is possible that the shape of the pebble has been augmented by polishing as the two sides are faceted; this is clearly different to the upper and lower faces which are both broadly naturally shaped. The central sha…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy pedestal / pendant seal matrix of medieval date (1250-1400). The die is roughly oval in plan and measures 21.6mm length and 16.6mm width. The reverse rises to a height of 26.5mm terminating in a triangular perforated loop. The body of the matrix is a hexagonal pedestal formed from six tapering sides. This terminates in a series of molded bands and the loop, which is narrowed. One of the facets / sides is marked with a crudely incised saltire cross, this corresponds with the start of the inscription and must have been made to tell which way up the seal was meant to be…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Post Medieval or early modern date (1550 - 1800). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and profile being formed in the shape of the royal crown. The front face of the weight has an intricate designed crown which has been achieved through casting. It consists of a double jeweled band from which a double looped frame expands. Detailed floriated side fleurs are present as a fluer-de-lys shaped ornaments. At the centre of the crown is a cross formed with wedge shaped axis, above this is a much degraded plume of feathers (presumably the em…

Carved stone mortar of probable medieval or early post medieval date (1250- 1600 AD). The mortar is incomplete and broadly circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile. It measures 370mm in diameter 200mm high and weighs 27 Kilograms. The mortar itself has been carved from a single block of stone, probably either a coarse limestone or possibly a gritstone. The outer face of the mortar has a large number of small angular dish shaped peck marks present. These are most evident on the lower part of the outer edge and on the large rib shaped lugs. On the edge of the outer face of the …

Carved architectural element / corbel carved as a stone head of probable medieval date (1200 - 1550). The stone head is carved from a block of light yellow - cream coloured limestone or possibly a very fine grained sandstone. A small area has an orange coloured iron staining probably due to the nature of the burial environment. There are also a number of brown coloured areas of mortar adhering to the face of the carving. The stone head has been reused, but was at one point buried. It is currently mortared over a doorway of a brick barn, probably built in the 1850’s to the model farm …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast lead alloy toy, probably that of a single sided ‘Shy Cock’, of probable post medieval date (1600-1800). The shy cock toy is irregular in plan and profile. It is cast in one piece which has subsequently been folded to form a shy. The main elements are a wide sub-circular thick base from which extends a relatively thin sectioned sheet which has cast decoration on one face and is plain on the other. The shape of the sheet is irregular due to it forming an elaborately tailed cockerel, which has subsequently been badly abraded and torn in the ploughsoil. The cockerel …

Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is irregular in both plan and profile. It has number of regular facets (caused by flaking) on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. There is a patch of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on the dorsal edge. This suggests that this flake comes from the secondary phase of tool production. The cortex is white and is similar to that of flint nodules from chalk areas. The underside (ventral face) of the flake shows a small neat bulb of percussion, which is position…

The fitting is sub-triangular in plan and is 13.1mm long, 7mm wide, and has a maximum thickness of 6.9mm. It weighs 1.54 grams. It is likely that the pointed end (now broken) would have terminated in a hook which would have fastened to the spur. The opposite end has a small round headed stud / rivet which would have attached to a leather strap. This fastener is formed from a rivet with a wide sub oval (tear or egg shaped) head and a long shank. It is attached through a pierced hole in …
