Object type: HAMMER
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Stone pebble hammer / macehead of probable prehistoric, specifically Mesolithic – Bronze Age, date 6500BC – 2000BC. The pebble hammer is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and profile. The pebble is either a calcareous-sandstone or possibly a calcareous-limestone. It has been water worn – so the procurement source is presumably either riverine or possibly glacial. It is possible that the shape of the pebble has been augmented by polishing as the two sides are faceted; this is clearly different to the upper and lower faces which are both broadly naturally shaped. The central sha…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped Mesolithic or early Neolithic flint blade or bladelet which is probably a microdenticulate. The blade is complete, with the proximal end having a feint bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The dorsal surface has three vertical negative linear scars and one lateral edge has a very fine retouch. This retouch is not particularly visible, but can be felt. It is trapezoidal in section. The flint is a pale mottled grey to white in colour. The bladelet measures 21.05mm in length, 6.02mm wide, 2.62mm thick and weighs 0.4 grams.

Object type: MICROBURIN
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint microlith which has been further knapped to form a microburin. The artefact is sub-rectangular in plan, which tapers slightly. The terminals are broken edges, therefore the proxmal and distal ends are missing. Along one lateral edge retouch has occurred from the dorsal surface forming a small indentation along the edge. The microlith is sub-trapezoidal in section with the scars occuring on the dorsal surface. The flint has developed a mottled cream patina. The tool measures 23.83mm long, 7.64mm wide, 2.35mm thick and weighs 0.4grams. The microburin dates to the …

A Mesolithic or early Neolithic flint bladelet. The bladelet does not appear to have been subject to further retouch after having been struck from its core. It is trapezoidal in shape and the distal and proximal ends are missing. It measures 14.06mm long, 7.53mm wide, 2.7mm thick and weighs 0.3 grams. The flint is white to pale grey in colour due to its patination. The blade dates to the Mesolithic to early Neolithic periods (-8300 - -2900).

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable Mesolithic flint microlith. The flint is an elongated trapezoidal in plan and is triangular in section. The distal and proximal ends are missing, and this appears to be due to recent damage. The ventral surface has a bulb of percussion and ripples. The dorsal surface has a central vertical off-centre ridge. The flint has a well developed blue/white patina. It measures 12.69mm long, 5.76mm wide, 1.92mm thick and weighs less than 0.1grams. The microlith has not been formed using the microburin technique, but rather appears to have been struck directly from a core, as a bulb…

A possible Mesolithic flint microlith. The flint is a sub-rectangular in plan and is triangular in section. The distal and proximal ends appear to be missing, and these are not recent breaks. One terminal appears to have some re-touch which is narrowing the terminal on one face. The opposite terminal has an area of natural scaring. The flint has a well developed blue/white patina. It measures 14.8mm long, 3.06mm wide, 3.19mm thick and weighs less than 0.1grams. A Mesolithic or Neolithic flint secondary flake or blade. The flake is triangular in section and in profile, with the dorsal surface having three negative scars forming a central peak. The proximal end is obliquely angled and has some re-touch, the distal end has possible re-touch. The flake measures 20.86mm long, 8.33mm wide, 3.5mm thick and weighs 0.5grams. As the length is shorter than the width of the object, the identification of it being a blade is uncertain, therefore described as a flake. The nature of the three scars on the dorsal surface may suggest a rejuvenation flake …
