A silver penny probably of Richard II - struck at the York mint using local dies. It is pobable that the coins is double struck and is also heavily worn making positive identification difficult. John Naylor (PAS National Finds Advisor for medieval coins) has suggested: This coin is probably of Richard II, York local dies. It seems to be badly double-struck so I think the : after EBO is more likely to be a single pellet, but again I'm not totally sure. It seems to best match Purvey's group A1 (no. 37) which has he reverse .EBO. Similar to North: 1330 Group A, C or D

The remains of a copper alloy early Roman bronze coin. The fragment is irregular in plan and profile and seems to have been altered by severe uncontrolled heat, creating a metalic blob similar in patina to many early Roman coins; sesterti, dupondi or asses. Due to the distortion a direct parallel has not been found.

Roman Republican Serrated Denarius of moneyer L. Aurelias Cotta (Crawford 314/1D). The coin was struck in Rome in 105 BC. The coin has also evidence of Brockage: The term Brockage refers to a mis-struck coin. In this example the reverse face of the coin has been over struck with the obverse (which is in reverse and indenteded rather than in relief). This was caused by the coin sticking to the upper part of the die when a second coin was struck. This sort of mistake is relatively common and must reflect the speed at which the coinage was being struck. The coin has also been pierced for…

Greek Coin of Syracuse (City State in Sicily) probably struck between 345-317 BC (most likely 344-336 BC). The coin is similar to an example in Sear: Greek Coins Vol 1. 1192 (this example has an eagle to the rigfht of thunderbolt) There is some debate over whether this is an ancient loss or whether it is a modern loss from a coin collectors collection. Greek coins have been recorded in Britain from archaeological sites, however, the vast majority of finds of greek coinage is likely to represent modern (post 1700 tourism). Only a secure archaeological context would be able to prove t…

Early Medieval sceatta Series D, type 2c continental runic sceat (Abramson, T. 2006, p.97-98). 'heavy type' c. 700-715, probably minted near the Rhine mouth. Metcalf distinguished between 'heavy' (1.1-1.3grams) and 'light' (<1grams) ones of this type. The light ones tend to be a bit more random and are possibly contempory copies (forgeries). A parralel for this one can be seen in Metcalf: Plate 9 example 173. Thanks are extended to Laura Burnett and Frank Basford for help identifying this coin
