Sherd from either an urn or carinated jar of early medieval date (500 – 700AD). The sherd is broken and incomplete; the inner surface of the pot is lost due to a laminating fracture. What remains is much abraded. The upper surface of the sherd is decorated; the surface is burnished and a decorative pattern impressed. This pattern consists of a series of double horizontal parallel bands which have been formed by impressing the surface with a tool, the section of each grooved band is U shaped. Two areas of these double bands exist on the sherd. Between these two double bands are a seri…

Unidentified fragment from a decorative piece of metalwork of probable early medieval date. The fragment if irregular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. The upper face has a pierced and incised decorate pattern which due to the nature of the piece is incomplete. Cast copper alloy pommel cap of early medieval / 7th – 9th century (600-850 AD) date. The pommel cap is of the ‘cocked hat’ type, being broadly sub-rectangular in plan and an irregular pyramid in profile. The pommel is incomplete; the two short sides are both broken and abraded. It is likely that these two points would have held small rivets to secure the pommel cap to the top of the knife / sword / dagger. The pommel is also hollow, the rear being concave and filled with the remains of iron tang. At the apex of the cap is a sub-rectangular slot which has a rim around the outer e…
