Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Neolithic date (4500-2000 BC). The flake is irregular in form being broadly triangular in shape. The upper (dorsal) face has the remains of removal scars. The edges are slightly denticulaed but this is most likely due to movement in the ploughzone (plough bumble). The flake is very thin being a mid grey colour.
The flakes measures 17mm length, is 15mm wide and 2mm thick

County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Mesolithic date (6500-4500 BC). The flake has been abraded within the ploughzone resulting in an irregular shape. Originally it was rectangular in form with a distinctive bulbar scar on the ventral face and prepared platform on the distal end. The dorsal face has a central crested ridge. All other removals are modern and the blade has been rolled in the topsoil. The flint is a coarse grained mid- grey black colour consistent with locally utilised chert.
The blade measures 20mm length, is 13mm wide.

Flint debitage, this is a tertiary flake. The flint has a large bulb of percussion on the ventral and mutable flaking scars on the dorsal. There as small flaking scars on both sides of the flint, but this is the result of natural process rather than knapping. Dark grey flint with lighter patches that has a general prehistoric date

Flint debitage, this is a tertiary flake. This is a long thin flake with a convexo-concave profile. There are two arrises on the dorsal and a small bulb of percussion on the ventral. there are chips taken out of one side but this natural damage rather that reworking. Mode grey flint with lighter speckles.

An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Neolithic date (4500-2000 BC). The flake is irregular in form being broadly triangular in shape. The upper (dorsal) face has the remains of removal scars and it is possible that the edges have been crudely retouched to form a short lived cutting or scraping tool. The flake is very thin being a mid grey brown colour.
The flakes measures 39.7mm length, is 25.7mm wide

An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Neolithic date or Early Bronze Age date (3500-1800 BC). From the form of the flake it is possible that this is an aborted barbed and tanged arrowhead discarded during knapping. A large pale grey coloured inclusion is present that would have prevented finer working. The flake is irregular in form having been struck as a blade like flake. One edge has been worked to create a pseudo-tang. The dorsal face is more heavily worked than the ventral although there is no evidence of retouch / finer working. The flint is a dark grey bl…

An abraded secondary debitage / waste flake of probable later Neolithic date or Early Bronze Age date (3500-1800 BC) which has been crudely retouched to form a scraper. The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and wedge shaped in cross section. The retouch has been applied to only the dorsal face on two edges and is best described as poorly organised short, sub-parallel and semi-abrupt. The flint is a brown black colour with a distinctive cream coloured cortex. It is likely that this secondary retouch is applied to utilise a waste flake and discarded shortly after creation.

A complete flint flake dating from between the Mesolithic and Bronze Age. The flake is roughly triangular in shape and has a white patinated surface. The dorsal surface bears multiple removal scars, including many hinged and stepped fractures at the proximal end. The butt is still present and is simple. This flake is likely debitage, perhaps a rejuvenation flake.

Fifteen irregularly shaped pieces of tertiary debitage / waste flakes dating from the Neolithic period. All the waste flakes are relatively thin in section - many showing evidence of multi-directional working and are probably from the finishing process. The upper / dorsal face on several of the flakes have numerous flake scar removals. The ventral faces are unworked. The flint is a mottled mid grey colour.

Five abraded tertiary debitage waste flakes struck from prepared cores of Neolithic date (4000-2000 BC). All the flakes are broadly a rectangular shape in plan have various opposing removals on the upper dorsal faces. Likewise all flakes have retouch applied to the one surviving original long edge on the dorsal face only; here it creates a serrated cutting edge: this retouch in all cases is best described as short, sub-parallel and semi-abrupt. The extent and competency of this retouch varies. The flint colour varies from a white through to a mid-grey or black

Eight (8) flakes of secondary flint waste / debitage of Neolithic date (3500-2100 BC). All of the flakes are from secondary phase of working / flaking and are a direct result of preparation of flint tools. Most show clear signs of direct hard hammer knapping and the majority have been removed with minimal loss of flint from the nodule / core. The cortex is all mid grey in colour and the majority is chalk derived. The majority of the flint is a light grey through to black colour, although some pieces have milky white surface patina.

A fragment of tertiary flint waste / debitage or possibly a broken tool / lithic implement of Neolithic date (3500-2100 BC). The artefact is formed on a broad flake with the majority of the knapped flakes being applied to the upper / dorsal face. The reverse / ventral shows a clear bulbar scar and conchoidal ripples emanating from a prepared platform. The dorsal has a series of long flake removal scars and both the long edges are retouched with irregular unorganised secondary working. The tip is snapped and the break is unpatinated. The flint is an unusual mid-reddish-brown colour wit…
