Object type: BALANCE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Irregular copper alloy bar with two broken and abraded terminals. This may be the remains of a composite set of balance scales, being one fragment of an arm balance. The bar is broadly cylindrical in shape, being slightly faceted on several of the faces. Both terminals are shaped with a series of irregular notches, presumably these notches are functional, wither to support small chains to suspend weighing pans or to aid the joining of two pieces of metal together with solder. The sides of the bar are notched slightly in several places and the outer edge of both sides is decorated with …

Two cast lead alloy vessel repairs (pot mends) of either Roman (50-400) or Medieval date (1200-1500). Both repairs are incomplete however one is more fragmentary than the other. They are both irregular in shape; in plan being broadly oval and H shaped in cross section. The mends are relatively thick with the outer face being even and neat, the inner surface more irregular. Neither mend has the remnants of the pottery vessel attached. These types of mend were used within both the Roman and Medieval period; however, as the site which these were found on has produced more Roman material …

An un-diagnostic sherd from a relatively thin walled coarseware pottery ‘Severn Valley’ vessel. The sherd is heavily abraded and probably dates to the Roman period (50 - 410), however, not enough of the sherd survives to be certain of the form or size and without this a more specific date is difficult. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit and ironstone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is two-tone with the outer surface being a uniform mid orange (oxidised) colour and the inn…
