Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MODERN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete heraldic mount provisionally dated to the early modern period 1650-1850. The mount is formed in two parts: the back plate is a very poor cast copper alloy amalgam which contains a considerable amount of lead alloy (evident in the grey corrosion product and typified by flakey laminated corrosion). The front plate is formed from a heavily incised and relatively thick silver sheet. The sheet has been fixed to the back plate by a combination of crimping and probably solder. The overall design on the front face is that of a gated tower or turret, the base of which sits on a twist…

Gold finger ring / 'posy ring' with incised inscription on interior face dated to the early modern period (post 1708). The finger-ring is formed from a D shaped section hoop of gold, being circular in plan. The edges of the ring have been slightly abraded and have small notches cut into the band caused by the movement in the soil. The inscription is incised into the internal face of the ring and is cut in an italic hand. It reads: God for me apoynted thee. The letters are slightly florid with slight embellished scrolls. After the inscription is a single rectangular stamped cartouche, …

A cast copper alloy weight of probable late post-medieval or modern date (1700-1800). The weight is part of a larger group of stacking weights, having a wide and relatively thick raised edge on the upper face. The front and rear faces both have turned circles around a central hollow point on the obverse and a raised boss on the reverse; all of these concentric circles are regular and well formed. Around the edge of the front face are a series of stamped marks, these are corroded but relatively legible: they consist if the initial A (probably for Queen Anne), a poorly defined sword (th…

Rally ID: 48 Modern: An folded silver foil from a walking stick cane. Hallmarks consist of an Anchor (Birmingham), Lion (standard mark), and date mark 'b' in rounded square surround. These are consistent with a date of 1901. Two other marks are present, either belonging to the maker or the owner of the artefact. These marks are a lozenge surround, with the letter H over the letters HB. Below the lozenge are the initials L B. As this artefact has been dated to 1901 using the hallmark, it is less than 300 years old, and does not come under the requirements of the Treasu…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy signet ring dated to the very late post medieval / early modern period c. 1750 - 1850 AD. The ring is complete having a wide central bezel with a shield shaped design on it. This shield is engraved and the detail is difficult to interpret. One possibility is that it is of a bust facing right (left in impression) wearing a ruff with a pointed beard and possibly long hair or a pony tail, this could be interpreted as either Shakespeare or Walter Raleigh. If this interpretation is incorrect then the design may be a debased coat of arms. The hoop of the finger ring is dec…

Cast copper alloy looped mount, possibly a furniture eschetcheon, of later post medieval or early modern date (1650-1800). In plan the mount is best described as pelta shaped, being formed from two oval lobes. In cross section the mount is sub-rectangular. The lower part of the front face of the mount is folded back upon itself to form a U shaped hook; however the upper part now broken seems to be rolled back upon itself to form a figure-of-eight. It is possible that the hook could have held a drawer handle or similar. The front face is decorated with a cast high relief design consist…
