Bronze As (contemporary copy) of Claudius struck Rome AD 41-50. Reverse type Minerva. RIC I, c.f. 100. Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example is a contemporary copy of those minted at the Lyon II, à la Petite Tête.

A large fragment of light blue glass, most likely to be a strap like handle from a flagon or globular glass vessel. The fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in shape and sub-rectangular with rounded corners in cross section. Both the short edges are broken and relatively unabraded. One short edge is snapped and the break looks relatively recent; a number of small holes are present in the section and these are probably gas/ inclusions within the glass matrix. The opposite edge is turned over at an angle of 90 degrees and would have joined with the body of the vessel. The break is also re…

The overall colour of the counter is a dark opaque blue; however the upper face has two turquoise irregular spots and a much smaller yellow one. The reverse (ventral) face has a single bulb of percussion and associated conchoidal ripples. The direction of this is at 90 degree to that on the ventral face. The sherd is glazed on the exterior face with a mottled greenish yellow glaze which is evenly applied and well preserved. The glaze is flecked with a darker material and is textured. The fabric is very hard, with a mid grey coloured core and oxidised grey surface. The fabric is mica rich with sparse very small white (quartz?) black (coal?) and orange (tile / brick?) flecks within the matrix. The sherds measures 44.8mm length, 23.2mm width, is 6.2mm thick and weighs 6.59 grams.

A cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Medieval date (1200-1500 AD). The weight is broadly circular in plan and regular in cross section. The upper face is relatively flat and has a series of cast marks impressed upon it. These marks seem to be random in shape and pattern, mostly being irregular crescents or pellets. The reverse face is flat and undecorated. The weight is a mid cream grey colour with an even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina which covers all surfaces. This weight is most likely to date from the later medieval period, although a direct parallel has not b…

A cast copper alloy weight of probable late post-medieval or modern date (1700-1800). The weight is part of a larger group of stacking weights, having a wide and relatively thick raised edge on the upper face. The front and rear faces both have turned circles around a central hollow point on the obverse and a raised boss on the reverse; all of these concentric circles are regular and well formed. Around the edge of the front face are a series of stamped marks, these are corroded but relatively legible: they consist if the initial A (probably for Queen Anne), a poorly defined sword (th…

Cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD). The spindle whorl is broadly circular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. The central hole is circular and has been cast / set centrally (diameter of the hole measures 7.9mm). Both the upper and lower faces have been cast with similar decoration consisting of a exterior band of raised pellets. The edge of the whorl and part of the face shows signs of a criss-cross pattern, this is unlikely to be related to a design but more a relic of the casting in a rough weaved (possibly hessian-like cloth…
