Object type: RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy ring of probable later prehistoric date - Late Bronze Age or Iron Age date (1000 – 300 BC). There is some debate as to the function of these decorated rings, in that some have been described as personal ornaments associated with articles of dress whilst others have described them as being associated with harness fittings. The ring is complete and is circular in plan and sub-oval (lentoid) in cross section. It measures 31.2mm in diameter, is 7.6mm wide, and is 5.5mm thick. The internal hole has a diameter of 16.4mm. The ring weighs 14.55 grams. Both faces o…

County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy (bronze) casting waste of uncertain date; most probably Mid - Late Bronze Age (1500-700 BC). However, due to the lack of context and the continuation of casting styles this artefact could be dated from Bronze Age - Roman period (c. 1500 BC - 450 AD). This fragment is from the neck (funnel / well) of a composite probably two part mould. The casting waste is conical; being oval in plan and D shaped in cross section. In profile the edges of the waste taper relatively evenly. The base of the casting waste is irregular with the remains (nipples) of two runners / casting jets b…

Complete cast copper alloy (bronze) flat axe of Early Bronze Age date (c. 2200 - 2000 BC). This example fits best into the earliest known copper axe and early bronze axes discovered in Britain. These are dated to the Early Bronze Age of metalworking stage II, which corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 2 circa 2350- 2050 CAL. BC. The flat axe is broadly sub rectangular in plan with a splayed crescent shaped blade. In profile it is broadly lentoid, with slight tapering edges. In cross section the axe is D shaped with one edge displaying a distinctive curved (domed edge) whilst the …

Cast copper alloy fragment from the tip of a blade; possibly from a mid to late Bronze Age spear / spearhead (c. 1400-800 BC). The fragment consists of the upper blade / terminal of the central rib. A relatively fresh break is present on the lower edge of the fragment. The edges of the spear blade are lost through abrasion / plough roll; from what survives these would have been relatively fine and very thin. The section of the blade is distinctly lentoid with a prominent central ridge. The central rib expands from the tip to the broken edge. The fragment has a dark brownish green colo…

A cast copper alloy / bronze lower blade fragment from a palstave dating from the Middle Bronze Age (1500-1150 BC). The blade is broken below the stop ridge and there is no evidence to suggest whether this fragment is from a looped - or unlooped palstave variant. The break is old and patinated; however, the edges are relatively clean and unabraded suggesting that the damage is pre-depositional. There is little trauma evidence, such as stressed metal fractures, on the body of the blade suggesting that the break could be deliberate rather than accidental. Both faces of the axe have sing…

Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A very worn and incomplete cast copper alloy (bronze) flat axe of Early Bronze Age date (c. 2200 - 2000 BC). The flat axe is broadly sub triangular in plan with a splayed crescent shaped blade. In profile it is broadly lentoid, with slightly tapering edges. In cross section the axe is rectangular. One long edge is curved and the opposite is relatively flat. The tips of the crescent shaped blade have been damaged through either abrasion or wear, as has the blade edge itself. A distinct blade facet is not present; it has been lost through abrasion. There is no evidence of any for…

County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of cast bronze (copper alloy / leaded bronze) South Wales type socketed axe (axehead) of Late Bronze Age date (c. 950-750 BC). These axes are considered to be part of the Ewart Park tradition (Metalworking phase XII) which corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 6-7 circa 1000-700 CAL. BC. The axe is incomplete being broken across the upper blade at the junction with the socket. No other parts were recovered by the finder. The sides of the axe are parallel and the fragment is broadly sub-rectangular. The sides show evidence of the casting flashes which have been trimmed an…

A fragment from the upper socket / mouth of a cast copper alloy (bronze) socketed South Wales Type ribbed axe / axehead of Late Bronze Age date (c. 950-750 BC). These axes are considered to be part of the Ewart Park metalworking tradition (Metalworking phase XII) which corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 6-7 circa 1000-700 CAL. BC. The fragment is miscast and relatively eroded; it represents a small area of the upper socket of an area below the moulded mouth / collar. It is irregular in plan and profile being broadly L shaped in cross section. Two ribs, both partial descend on …

A fragment of highly leaded cast copper alloy of uncertain date. The fragment is undiagnostic being broadly rectangular in plan and triangular in section. The surface is a mid - light greenish grey colour and it is eroded in the ploughsoil. This type of artefact is not normally recorded, however it was recovered from close to the findspot of HESH-4E3374 and may hint at Late Bronze Age metalworking in the area. The fragment measures: 22.2mm length, 21.9mm width, is 5.7mm thick and weighs 6.00 grams

Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy (bronze) casting waste of uncertain date; most probably Mid - Late Bronze Age (1500-700 BC). However, due to the lack of context and the continuation of casting styles this artefact could be dated from Bronze Age - Roman period (c. 1500 BC - 450 AD). This fragment is from the neck (funnel / well) of a composite, probably two part, mould. The casting waste is conical; being oval in plan and D shaped in cross section. In profile the edges of the waste taper relatively evenly. The base of the casting waste is irregular with the remains of one long rectangular runner being pr…

A cast copper alloy fragment of uncertain function and uncertain date (2000 BC - AD1500). The fragment is part of a larger item - it is semi-circular in plan and rectangular in profile. The exterior surface is heavily eroded and corroded and the original surface is now lost. It is a mid green colour with an abarded surface patina. Due to the size and thickness of this piece it seem most likely to be from the butt of an Early Bronze Age flat or flanged axe - most probably a Migdale type axe from the last phase of the Early Bronze Age (EBA III 2000 -1800 BC). However, due to the fragmen…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The triangular tip from an arrowhead of uncertain Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (3500 - 2100 BC). The tip is possibly from a barbed and tanged arrowhead - although due to the fragmentary nature of the flake it is difficult to be sure. The arrowhead has been formed on a tertiary flake of mottled mid grey white coloured flint. The external - triangular edges are neatly retouched with delecate rippled flaking. The dorsal face is heavily retouched with long parallel flake scars / removals - whilst the ventral has very small neat removals immediately on the edge. Generally both the ve…
