Incomplete silver penny of Edward I, Mint London, Class 2b January - May 1280. The penny has been reused to form a brooch with a small silver loop being soldered to the obverse face. It has been applied in such a way that the cross on the reverse is vertical. It is possible that the front face has also been gilt (although this may be a result of the burial conditions). The lower part of thE coin has been lost - probably as a result of movement in the soil.

Incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative (Polden Hill style) brooch of Roman date (43-150AD). The wings are semi-cylindrical with perforated wing / end caps. The wing caps are incomplete and the axis bar, spring and pin are missing. It is likely that the pin / spring would have been attached by an external chord to a (now broken) rearward facing hook. The remnant of this hook is located at the centre of the wings on the upper edge. The reverse of the head of the brooch (between the two wings) has a oval shaped recess. A possible, incomplete cast lead alloy (pewter?), disc brooch of Weetch type 5 and early medieval date (10th century AD). There is some debate as to whether this is actually part of a brooch or possibly a post medieval lead token; due to significant areas of damage it is impossible to be certain of the identification. However, it is the recorders assessment that the diagnostic elements of design and potential fittings on the reverse suggest that this is a brooch. If the artefact is a brooch it would have originally been circular, however due to abrasion and plough damage, it is now…

On the reverse are two rearward facing perforated lug that would have held the spring support bar. The bow emanates from the front of the head plate and is undecorated except for a moulded knee at the bows apex. The bow is truncated below the knee resulting in the loss of the mid and lower section of the brooch. Date 75-175AD

On the reverse of the bow head there are the remains of two vertical sub-oval integral lugs with a central perforation. The spring partially survives. The bow is incomplete due to an old break, it is a lozenge in section and is narrowed. The brooch measures 28.75mm length, is 13.45mm wide and 9.3mm thick. It we…

Incomplete cast copper alloy bow and fantail brooch (43-200AD). The wings are semi-cylindrical with perforated wing / end caps. The wing caps are incomplete and the axis bar, spring and pin are lost. The pin / spring would have been attached by an external chord to a rearward facing hook which is located at the centre of the wings on the upper edge. There is a small sub-circular concave hollow positioned between the wings on the reverse of the head, this hollow is slightly conical in shape and relatively deep. From the top / head of the brooch a small projection extends; it is likely t…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative (Dolphin style) brooch of Roman date (43-150AD). The wings are incomplete with semi-cylindrical with perforated wing / end caps. The bow head is hump-like, and angular (comma shaped) in profile. The bow is D shaped in cross section. It extends to a thickened blunted point of a foot. It is possible that ori…

Cast and drawn length of copper alloy wire, fashioned into the spring and hinge for a Roman bow brooch, probably dated to the period 50-250AD. The wire has been coiled around a length of iron which would have functioned as an axis bar to the brooch. The wire is sub-circular in cross section and has been wound into a section of spring, which is incomplete. This fragment consists of four turns, of which the final one extends forming the pin. The pin is tapered along its length terminating in a sharp point. The cross section of the wire measures 1.8mm and the spring / pin measures 16.9mm …
