Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: County of Herefordshire

A rim fragment of a wheelmade ceramic vessel. The rim is slightly bulbous and ā€˜nā€™ shaped in profile. The core and interior is a light grey and the exterior is a mottled grey/brown colour. Small body sherd from a Severn Valley pottery vessel, not enough survives to indicate the form, probably dating from the Roman period (100-400 AD). The sherd is irregular in plan and profile. It is highly abraded and relatively thin. The fabric is a very soft earthenware with a powdery surface. The fabric has a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, iron stone and grog (pottery temper) inclusions. The fabric also has a large amount of mica within its make up. The fabric colour is a uniform orange. There is no evidence of a glazed surface applied to the external face of the sherd…

Object type: CERAMIC BUILDING MATERIAL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Three fragments of possible ceramic building material. All three fragments are relatively robust and may possibly come from some form of vessel, however from the shapes of the pieces it is more likely that they are fired remnants of wattle and daub walls (being the daub part). The reasons for this are the organic burnt out inclusions and also the series of very shallow U shaped sectioned hollows; these may correspond with the wattle hurdles in a wall. The fabric of the fragments is very similar to Severn Valley pottery dating from the Roman period (100-400 AD). However such a tight dat…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Irregular folded lead weight of unknown date (probably Roman ā€“ Post Medieval 50-1700 AD). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and profile. The upper edge has been pierced by a regular pierced hole (diameter: 6.2mm). The lower edge of the weight has been folded back upon itself which has created a much thicker lower edge; this presumably makes the weight hang evenly. There is no evidence of cast or incised decoration on the weight. The weight is a mid cream yellow colour with a relatively even patina. There are small areas of light grey active laminating corrosion; this is m…

Cast lead or lead alloy bi-convex spindle whorl of Roman to later Medieval date (1 ā€“ 1500 AD). The spindle whorl sub-circular in plan, it measures 28.4mm diameter, and is 15.7mm thick. There is a circular cast hole through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre. The diameter of the hole measures 8.8mm. The whorl weighs 45.17 grams. Both sides of the spindle whorl have been decorated with a series of cast high-relief lines which radiate from the central hole. This design has been badly affected by both laminating corrosion and abrasion. On one face the ribs are evenly space…

Cast lead alloy vessel repair (pot mend) of either Roman (50-400) or Medieval date (1200-1500). The repair is irregular in shape and plan being broadly oval in plan and H shaped in cross section. The mend itself is relatively thick with the outer face being even and neat, the inner surface is much more irregular. A sherd of the pottery vessel remains attached to the repair. The sherd is from a relatively thin walled (c. 5.2mm thick) earthenware vessel. Incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative (Polden Hill style) brooch of Roman date (43-150AD). The wings are semi-cylindrical with perforated wing / end caps. The wing caps are incomplete and the axis bar, spring and pin are missing. It is likely that the pin / spring would have been attached by an external chord to a (now broken) rearward facing hook. The remnant of this hook is located at the centre of the wings on the upper edge. The reverse of the head of the brooch (between the two wings) has a oval shaped recess. The bow head is hump-like, and slightly angular in profile…

Two bricks (ceramic building material formed into regular tablets) of probable Roman date (100-350 AD). The two bricks are of a similar size and shape; being sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. They are formed from a relatively soft (powdery) mica rich fabric with significant quantities of angular and sub-angular grit, quartz, and grog (broken pottery) inclusions. The fabric is a uniform mid-orange colour. The surface of both bricks is relatively rough and pitted. There is no evidence of mortar or other similar compounds and this would suggest that they were either not use…

Regular mud-stone nodule used and shaped into a brick (ceramic building material) of probable Roman date (100-350 AD). The nodule is a similar size to the other examples (HESH-EA0F18 ) and found at the same site. It is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. It is formed from a fine grained silt or mud stone which is mica rich. It is a uniform grey colour with a slightly powdery surface.
