Bronze As (contemporary copy) of Claudius struck Rome AD 41-50. Reverse type Minerva. RIC I, c.f. 100. Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example is a contemporary copy of those minted at the Lyon II, à la Petite Tête.

A large fragment of light blue glass, most likely to be a strap like handle from a flagon or globular glass vessel. The fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in shape and sub-rectangular with rounded corners in cross section. Both the short edges are broken and relatively unabraded. One short edge is snapped and the break looks relatively recent; a number of small holes are present in the section and these are probably gas/ inclusions within the glass matrix. The opposite edge is turned over at an angle of 90 degrees and would have joined with the body of the vessel. The break is also re…

A fragment from either a finger ring or possibly broken a handle of a vessel formed from a dark purplish blue glass. The fragment is broadly C shaped in plan and D shaped in cross section; although the section varies along its length. The edges of the artefact are rolled and the two breaks are fresh and smooth. The outer face is slightly faceted and decorated with a series of diagonal lines impressed into the glass distorting its shape. These decorated areas are not uniform and the distance between them varies considerably. The glass fragment measures 23.9mm external diameter 15.4…

Glass gaming counter of probable Roman date (50-400 AD). The counter is circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The edges of the counter are faceted and the reverse face is flat. It measures 20.1mm diameter and is 5.6mm thick; it weighs 3.17 grams. The overall colour of the counter is a dark opaque blue; however the upper face has two turquoise irregular spots and a much smaller yellow one. These spots are caused by inclusions in the glass and maybe deliberate or caused by happenstance. A direct parallel has not been found but due to other material recorded from this site a…

An unidentified and undated iron artefact; it is possible that this may be part of a hook or similar style of artefact probably associated with buildings. In form the artefact is similar to a large nail with a hook shaped terminal. The nail is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and square in cross section. It tapers from a thickened middle to a corroded point. The opposite terminal has been flattened (being rectangular in cross section) and is curled back upon itself forming a crude hook.
