A cast lead alloy mount in the form of a stylished fish or dolphin. The dolphin has an arched back, with the slightly forked tail bending round to meet the back. This is very similar to Roman depictions of the dolphin. Under the head, it is flattened to form a basic base, it is possible that this area formed an attachment area to another object. The casting seam is visible on the internal curve of the arched back.
It measures 48.63mm in length, 34.64mm height and is 11.64mm thick. It weighs 59.2 grams.
There is currently still a degree of debate over the dating a…

An incomplete cast lead alloy zoomorphic mount or figurine in the form of a stylised fish or dolphin. The figure consists of the head facing right with a slightly rounded open mouth. The upper part of the jaw is thicker and more prominent than the lower half. The figure has a large eye consisting of an oval shaped pellet set in an oval shaped groove. The body of the figurine has an arched back which curves and tapers to a broken terminal. Other examples on the database suggest that the body would have then terminated in a forked tail. The lead is a mid-greyish cream colour. This is ve…

A cast copper alloy mount with inlaid enamel cells of unknown function dating from early within the Roman period (c. 60-150 AD). It is unclear due to the lack of functional information which direction the mount was aligned (vertically or horizontally). The mount has been illustrated (by Candy Stevens) as being horizontal, however it now seems likely that it may have been applied vertically. In this description the mount is described vertically, with the widest end upmost.
The mount is moulded in three dimensions being broadly rectangular in plan, it tapers along its length and both …

The cast mount appears to be complete or near-complete (with a length of 19.7mm and a weight of 8.2g) and comprises the head, body and fore limbs of a beast, possibly a bear or similar. The mount was attached using a fixing within the sub-circular sectioned, hollowed end (of 9.8mm – 10.4mm diameter), which is angled at an approximate 45° angle to the axis of the body. The fixing appears to have been ferrous but is now heavily corroded with no magnetic trace of iron surviv…

A similar fitting, albeit from the handle of a metal vessel, was found in excavations at Verulamium (see Frere, 1972, fig. 43, no. 141) and the piece is also comparable to the smaller lion-headed casket mounts of the 1st century AD (see Borrill in Partridge, 1998, p. 320). Cast copper alloy looped mount, possibly a furniture eschetcheon, of later post medieval or early modern date (1650-1800). The lower part of the front face of the mount is folded back upon itself to form a U shaped hook; however the upper part now broken seems to be rolled back upon itself to form a figure-of-eight. It is possible that the hook could have held a drawer handle or similar. The front face is decorated with a cast high relief design consist…
