A lead alloy weight, possibly a pump seal weight, of likely Post Medieval date (c. AD 1650-1800). The weight is sub-rectangular in plan, profile, and cross section. On the top of the weight, there is a sub-rectangular recess where the left and right hand edges are raised and in the centre there is a sub-oval lug (26.19mm long, 22.75mm wide). On the reverse, there are two raised sections on both the left and right hand side that both curve inwards, creating a recess that has larger, trapezoidal sections at the top and the bottom of the weight connected by a narrower sub-rectangula…

A lead alloy weight or token of Medieval to Post Medieval date (c. AD 1400-1800). The object is circular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. It has a relatively uniform thickness and there is no extant decoration on either the obverse or the reverse. There are the possible remnants of a central pellet on the obverse, since there is a slightly circular raised section in the centre that shows signs of breakage in the past, however, there does not appear to be any strong evidence to suggest it was an intentionally moulded pellet rather than an accidental product of casting. The dis…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1200-1500 AD). The weight is broadly circular in plan and domed / D shaped in cross section. The upper and lower faces are relatively flat and are undecorated. The sides are faceted making the front face seem domed. The underside of the weight is recessed with an uneven shallow dome. The weight is a mid-grey colour with an even, but slightly corroded and abraded patina which covers all surfaces. This weight is most likely to date from the later medieval period, although a direct parallel has not been found. The weight measur…

Cast lead alloy weight with integrally cast loop of probable medieval or post medieval date (1250 - 1700). The weight is broken across its upper edge and the top part is now lost. What remains is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. The weight is broken across the loop (diameter 2.4mm). There seems to be no decoration present. The weight is a mid grey cream colour with a good relatively unabraded patina. Where abrasion has occurred this has revealed the grey metal beneath. There is no evidence of corrosion products. The weight measures 39.9mm length, 19.7mm wide,…

A cast lead alloy suspended weight of uncertain date. The crude weight has a flat base and a broadly round cross section which gradually tapers up to the narrow top where an iron loop suspension passed through its body. The stumps of the loop are present at either end. The weight is plain with an off white lead-oxide pationa. There are some rust stains at the top near the stumps of the iron loop. Height 36mm. Diameter 23mm - 26mm. Weight 103g.

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is sub-cylindrical being oval in plan and cross section; it is D shaped in profile. A single cast hole extends through the middle of the weight and is filled with a white coloured lead alloy corrosion product; it is likely that this was used to suspend the weight and aided safe-keeping and storage. The underside of the weight has an irregular recess within and the surface is uneven. The weight is undecorated although the external surface is covered in knife marks and cuts. It is a mid-grey colour with a…

Cast copper alloy weight of post-medieval date (1500-1850). The weight is part of a larger group of stacking weights, having a wide and relatively thick raised edge on the upper face. The front and rear faces both have turned circles around a central hollow point; all of these concentric circles are regular and well formed. There are no stamped counter marks. The reverse face has a central recess filled with white lead alloy. The weight is a mid green colour with an abraded surface patina. The weight measures 6.2mm thick, diameter of 32.5mm and weighs 24.83 grams (0.87 ozs).

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval or post medieval date (1300 - 1800). The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-triangular (conical) in cross section. There is no suspension loop. The weight is a mid-grey colour with an even patina that covers all surfaces. It has been marked and abraded in the soil; this has caused the weight to become asymmetrical. Similar standing weights have been dated to the medieval and post medieval periods. It is likely that the weight would have been used as a trade weight weighing four ounces - 1/4 lb. The weight measures 31.0mm wide,…
