A corroded cast copper alloy buckle plate / buckle chape of probably post medieval date (1600-1750). The plate is broadly rectangular with a forked end is curled round to clasp the separate bar that contains the incomplete remnants of iron pivot pin. The opposite end tapers to form a V shaped wedge. The object has a pair of rivet holes used to fix the plate to a strap. The rivets are lost. No decoration is present, this may be due to the advanced state of corrosion. The p[late is a mid - light green colour with a worn and corroded surface patina. A similar example has been recorded on…

The body has two circular rivet holes forming a column. In both rivet holes there are the remains of iron rivets. Towards the lower tip of the triangular body there is a collar and the tip is narrowed before forming an integral rectangular hook which is incomplete. The surface of the fitting has traces of a mid brown/green patina and iron staining. The strap fitting measures 27.13mm long and 12.27mm wid…

The artefact is broadly triangular in plan and profile. The lower edge extends to form a broken and distorted D shaped ring / hoop. The upper part of the fitting gas a broad but thin longitudinal slot that extends about half the length of the object. It was possibly usd as a sliding belt fitting, with the belt passing through the slot, and the end piercing being used to suspend something. A cast copper alloy strap fitting, mount, or harness fitting of probable later Iron Age or Roman date. The fitting is incomplete and irregular in plan - in cross section it is rectangular. The fragment consists of an incomplete irregular annular ring from which two similar shaped projections extend. These projections are trefoil shape and relatively squat - they are aligned with one projecting within the ring - and the other without. At the mid point between the two projections the ring is pierced - this hole is iron stained suggesting that the pin / rivet was originally iron. The u…

Cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is an eroded hexagonal shape in plan and rectangular in section. The upper face is decorated with an applied surface comprising a double saltire cross over a vertical cross. The crosses are bordered with an applied white metal - possibly tin or silvering. There are traces or red coloured metal on the surface - although this maybe a corrosion product . The reverse face of the fitting is flat with two cast sub-rectangular projections (hooks) which are both bent and the ends broken.…

A cast copper alloy strap fitting often associated with spurs of late medieval or post medieval date (1400-1700). The fitting is composite; the body of the mount is irregular in plan and rectangular in section. The plate element is cast in one piece and the lower pointed terminal is bent back upon itself to form a hook. At the opposite end the oval plate is perforated and a single oval (mushroom) headed stud is joined. This allowed the fitting to be fastened to a leather belt or strap. For an example of how these fittings were used see HESH-A12466 a spur found in Bridgnorth: http://fin…

An incomplete cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is irregular (broadly sub-rectangular) in plan. In cross section the fitting is sub-rectangular (rectangular with rounded coroners). The upper surface is decorated with both a cast and pierced design which is probably a debased flower / plant. The flower bud is large an oval in shape with radiating ribs suggesting petals below this is a stem which is defined by two pierced holes and flanked by two petals. The stem projects below the base and is hooked back upon itsel…
