Medieval copper alloy seal matrix of 12th or 13th century date The seal matrix is incomplete, missing the terminal loop and edge of the die (with a surviving length of 22.9mm and a weight of 8.7g). A cast modern copy of a medieval copper alloy seal matrix dated to the medieval period (1200 - 1400 AD). The original matrix was given to the landowner after this copy had been made. The following description is of this copy rather than the original - no comment can be made on the metal, colour or weight. The cast copy is very well made and the casting is particularly fine and it seems to be a very good likeness of the original A cast copper alloy pedestal / pendant seal matrix of medieval date (1200-1400). The die oval in plan and body of the matrix is a pedestal formed from six …

Cast lead alloy seal matrix of medieval date (1200 - 1400 AD). The seal matrix was originally circular in plan however it has suffered abrasion in the soil and some distortion from movement having a bowed profile. The front face is relatively flat, the lower half is partially lost due to abrasion and corrosion. The design and lettering is poor, second rate, being relatively poorly cut but relatively regularly spaced. The reverse face is decorated with a cast pattern, possibly either a debased fleur-de-lis or more stylised flower pattern. The design comprises two oval hoops from which…

A personal cast lead or lead alloy seal matrix. The matrix is a flat-baked type which is circular in plan. The upper face of the matrix is undecorated. Integral to the edge, on the upper surface, there is a small perforated lug. The lug is the terminal of a high-relief rib which bisects the matrix on the upper surface. The underside of the matrix has a legend and central device. The legend appears to read S' WILELM [.]E[....]ING: The device depicts a large flower. The surface of the matrix has an abraded mid cream patina and some recent damage on the underside. It is also bent, probab…

A complete cast copper alloy 'vesica' shaped seal matrix. The seal matrix is a pointed oval in plan. The reverse has an incomplete integral loop at one corner. The loop is set at an angle of 90° to the plain of the body of the seal and expands from a vertical rib which divides the seal in two. Apart from the rib the reverse of the matrix is plain and undecorated. The device on the underside of the matrix is possibly a bird stood on the edge of a nest, however the surface is extremely abraded and possibly too worn to see any detail. This also applies to the legend around the edge of t…

A fragment from a cast lead alloy seal matrix of late medieval date (1200-1400). The fragment is irregular in plan - originally being a pointed oval / vesica-shape. The broken edges are all old and abraded and a light grey coloured corrosion product is present. The design on the front face is lost - the central element comprised a vertical hollow sided shape - possibly a vertical cross which is enclosed by a slight incised border which echos the shape of the seal. The inscription is similarly lost - from what survives the following letters can be seen: [...]RD [...] ENO [...]. In the …
