Record ID: WAW-569C21
Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probable Mesolithic to early Bronze Age (8000 - 1000BC) retouched flake: The flint flake is knapped from a brown flint which has a strap of grey patina on the side edge. The ventral surface has a large bulb or percussion and slight conchoidal ripples. The dorsal surface has a negative scar. The distal end has a small curved notch which has been formed by re-touch. The flake measures 18.66mm long, 23.56mm wide, 6.25mm thick and weighs 2.33g. Retouched flakes are difficult to date as they are present throughout prehistory. Thus, a wide date range for this piece is suggested.

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint flake, probably Mesolithic in date. It has possible deliberate notching along its edges and one edge of the tip may have been truncated to allow it to be used as a burin. The butt of the flake is cortical. The flint measures 40.21 mm long, 26.94 mm wide, 12.3 mm thick and weighs 10.5 grams. The flint is grey in colour.

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint flake, retouched along both lateral edges. The left lateral edge has fine retouch applied from the ventral surface. The right lateral edge has some retouch towards the proximal end. The distal end of this edge is cortical. The flake may have been used for cutting or scraping. It is sub triangular in shape and measures 26.86 mm long, 11.54 mm wide, 6.5 mm thick and weighs 1.3 grams. The flint is grey to cream in colour.

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint notched flake. The flake is secondary and retains a small amount of cortex on its right lateral edge on the dorsal surface. There are negative flake scars on the dorsal surface along with cresting evidence for platform preparation. The bulb of percussion and bulb scar are visible on the ventral surface. The left lateral edge has an apparently deliberate notch, retouched from the dorsal side. Notched flakes are common finds at Mesolithic sites. These are thought to have had a specific function and were possibly used in the manufacture and fine shaping of arrow shafts …

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flake, retouched at the distal end to form a truncated piece. The truncation is oblique and transverse, applied to the right side of the distal end from the ventral surface. The bulb of percussion ans striking platform are clearly visible at the proximal end. The flint is dark to pale grey in colour, measuring 32.8 mm in length, 15.7 mm in width, 3.05 mm thick and 1.6 grams in weight. The function of truncated pieces is not certain, although they are commonly found in Mesolithic assemblages. Such pieces may have been utilised as tools in their own right, or may have been …

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC

A Mesolithic flint notched flake. The bulb of percussion, striking platform and bulb scar are all visible at the proximal end of the flake where it has been struck from a core. The flake is approximately two thirds cortical on its dorsal surface, with only the left side free of cortex. It is this side, approximately mid-way down the left lateral edge of the flake, where a notch has been removed with a blow from the ventral face. This flake may have been selected to form such a tool because the residual cortex would allow the tool to be held comfortably. The distal end of the flake appe…

Record ID: NARC-CCB042
Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint notched flake. The flake has been retouched with a deliberate notch on the right lateral edge (when the flake is held with the dorsal side facing). The notch appears to have been created with two percussive blows from the ventral surface. There is limited retouch on the left lateral edge of the distal end also. The flint appears to have been snapped at the distal end, and based on the patina of the flint this appears to be an ancient break. Whether this break was deliberate or accidental is difficult to discern, though the distal edge has not been truncated with reto…

A Mesolithic flake. The flake has been subject to abrupt retouch at the distal end and to a slightly lesser extent on both lateral edges. The flint is of a pale grey to white colour. It measures 20.7 mm long, 15.1 mm wide, 4.8 mm thick and weighs 1.2 grams. It is lozenge shaped in section.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC

A Mesolithic notched flake. The notch is on the right lateral edge of the flake when held with the dorsal side facing. The notch was created using semi-abrubt retouch from the dorsal face. Additional working at the butt of the flake is most likely to be associated with platform preparation of the core ahead of knapping and what are probably bulb scars are visible here also. Notched flakes are common finds at Mesolithic sites. These are thought to have had a specific function and were possibly used in the manufacture and fine shaping of arrow shafts for hunting (Butler 2005, 112). T…

A Mesolithic notched flake. The notch is on the left lateral edge of the flake when held with the dorsal side facing. The notch was created with a blow from the dorsal surface and followed up by retouch from the same side. There is also evidence for retouch at the distal end of the flake. This may have allowed the flake to be used as a scraper as well as a notched tool, though it would also have made the flake more comfortable to hold whilst the notched section was being used. The flake is approximately one third cortical, with most of the cortex at the proximal end on the dorsal s…
