A brass mechanised and orignally sprung powder measure. This machined composite brass element fixed via a screw thread (now lost) to the mouth of a leather powder horn / flask. By depressing the sprung lever a series of shaped slides move allowing a single measure of black powder to be dispensed into the muzzle of a either a musket or rifle. The form of this measure is unusual and is likely to date from the period 1780-1860, being used as an alternative to paper cartridges. The form of powder flask is likely to have been used for sport rather than military service.

An incomplete cast lead powder flask cap, used for measuring a charge of gunpowder; of probable seventeenth century date (AD 1600 -AD 1700). The cap is mostly complete, however the mouth of the cup is squashed / crumpled resulting in vertical splits. The cap, which has an indistinct rim, is broadly circular in plan and cylindrical in profile, however much has been distorted by movement in the ploughsoil. Originally it would have been circular or oval in plan (as viewed from above). The comparatively thin sides (or walls) would have flared outwards towards the oval or circular mouth. T…

Post Medieval (mid 17th century) powder measure cap: The lead cap is cylindrical with a sealed terminal. In plan the upper cap is sub-oval and on opposite edges the cap, there are two integral loops. The lower edge of the rim has a bordering thickened ridge on the outer face and the rim has been squashed together. The cap has a stone ball stuck inside.
The surface of the cap is a matte off-white colour.
It measures 19.26mm thick across the narrow upper face, 27.32mm long across the rim and 19.38mm from the lower rim to upper edge. It weighs 27.31g.
