A cast copper alloy medieval enamelled and gilt heraldic mount or applique / plaque (1200-1350). The plaque is poorly preserved with the upper surface being heavily eroded and corroded. In shape the plaque is sub-triangular / shield shaped with the upper surface being slightly domed and edges faceted. The reverse is flat and undecorated and there is no evidence for any pierced or applied fixing points or suspension fittings. A copper alloy Limoges style enamelled plaque or mount of medieval date (AD 1150 - 1400). The plaque is a lozenge (diamond) shape in plan and is rectangular in cross section; the profile is slightly distorted by movement in the soil. The upper face of the plaque is decorated with a champlevé style enamel surface comprising a central light blue vertical cross with small pellets of red enamel on the four axis arms of the cross, at the centre of the cross is a small hollow - most likely filled with a red coloured enamel now lost. Cast lead bi-faced plaque of modern date (1857-1870). The plaque is one of a number which are known commonly as ‘Billy and Charley’s’ or the ‘Shadwell Forgeries.’ They were produced as a series of fake antiquities in direct response to the growth of the antiquities market in the Victorian period.
