A copper alloy possible pin head of possible Roman date. The artefact is irregular in plan and profile. In form it is closest to a ram's head comprising two cast coiled horns either side of a pointed sub-triangular face. The eyes of which indistinct but are broadly oval in shape. On the lower edge is an oval irregular shaped projection - possibly the remains of the pin. Where patina survives it is a mid grey green colour and scroll like grooves depict the horns. Due to the condition of the piece a direct parallel and identification cannot be given, it resembles a brooch from Eggboroug…

A cast copper alloy artefact, most probably a head-dress pin of the post-medieval period (often known as a bodkin). The artefact is rectangular in cross-section, with slightly rounded corners. The form tapers in width and section along the length. Both ends are broken; both are patinated. The break towards the narrower end suggests that the tip originally extended to form a projecting spike or point. Both of the wider faces are decorated in similar fashion, with a series of disjointed longitudinal incised lines. It measures 88.2mm in length, 4.7mm in width, is 3.2mm in maximum thickn…

Post Medieval (16th century) pin: The copper alloy pin, which is cast, is not complete. It is an elongated drop-shape and is circular in section. The tip tapers to a circular collar and it then has broken edge, but this is not a recent break and in the centre there is an iron core. The exterior surface is decorated with three roundels and at the rounded terminal there are small annulets which appear to be ropework filigree decoration, but are actually cast. Beneath the roundels, and reaching the narrowed tip there are three triangular panels also filled with filigree annulets. The rem…

An incomplete heavily eroded cast copper-alloy pin of Roman date (50-300 AD). It is most likely that this is a hairpin; however, due to the fact that pins can be used for multiple tasks it is difficult to attribute function. The pin is broadly sub-rectangular in plan tapering from the 'turned' head to a break. It is cast in one-piece. The head of the pin is oval in shape with a domed shaped boss on its upper edge. This boss is enclosed by a single recessed circlet. Below the head are a series of turned (baluster like) decorations where the shaft expands and tapers relatively evenly. T…

A small oval shaped scar is present on the underside of the pinhead. This is the point where the pin shaft would have joined the head. This damage is relatively old as a patina has developed over the break. It is highly likely that the pin head is hollow, being formed from two parts joined by solder, the pin shaft would have been attached through a oval slot in the lower half. A clear longitudinal seam can be seen at the mid point of the head. Th…
