Report for H.M. Coroner 2005 T567: Wellington, Herefordshire: gold mourning ring This tiny gold ring is engraved on the exterior with a skull flanked by cross-hatching all round the hoop. The engraving was originally enamelled black and traces remain. The inside is engraved in lower case script: In remembrance of MK, with a central dot after the M and the K, and a maker's mark RM (?) in a shield. The maker's mark is not recorded in the standard works such as Grimwade and Jackson. This is a long-lasting type of memorial ring that continued well into the first half of the 18th c…

Cast copper alloy signet ring dated to the very late post medieval / early modern period c. 1750 - 1850 AD. The ring is complete having a wide central bezel with a shield shaped design on it. This shield is engraved and the detail is difficult to interpret. One possibility is that it is of a bust facing right (left in impression) wearing a ruff with a pointed beard and possibly long hair or a pony tail, this could be interpreted as either Shakespeare or Walter Raleigh. If this interpretation is incorrect then the design may be a debased coat of arms. The hoop of the finger ring is dec…

Misshapen cast copper alloy finger ring of probable Medieval date (1200-1450 AD). The hoop of the finger ring is distorted, originally it would have been oval or circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The hoop flares (expands) at the shoulders of the ring to form a relatively plain decorated bezel. The bezel is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. Any decoration present has been lost through a combination of abrasion and corrosion. The bezel has traces of a design engraved on it and it is possible that it may have been used as a signet ring – to impr…

A fragment from either a finger ring or possibly broken a handle of a vessel formed from a dark purplish blue glass. The fragment is broadly C shaped in plan and D shaped in cross section; although the section varies along its length. The edges of the artefact are rolled and the two breaks are fresh and smooth. The outer face is slightly faceted and decorated with a series of diagonal lines impressed into the glass distorting its shape. These decorated areas are not uniform and the distance between them varies considerably. The glass fragment measures 23.9mm external diameter 15.4…

Gold finger ring / 'posy ring' with incised inscription on interior face dated to the early modern period (post 1708). The finger-ring is formed from a D shaped section hoop of gold, being circular in plan. The edges of the ring have been slightly abraded and have small notches cut into the band caused by the movement in the soil. The inscription is incised into the internal face of the ring and is cut in an italic hand. It reads: God for me apoynted thee. The letters are slightly florid with slight embellished scrolls. After the inscription is a single rectangular stamped cartouche, …

Cast copper alloy fragment from a finger ring of probable later early medieval or medieval date (700-1200 AD). The fragment consists of the central bezel and shoulders, the band of the ring is lost and a diameter cannot be suggested. In plan the finger ring would have been broadly circular. The bezel is broadly oval with the shoulders forming a pointed oval shape. The shoulders of the ring taper and contract evenly and are not stepped in anyway. The fragment of ring is of an even thickness. It measures 22.7mm length, is 19.0mm width (across the bezel) and is also 2.4mm thick (at the sa…

Cast copper alloy finger ring of probable later Medieval or post medieval date (1350-1600 AD). The outer hoop of the finger ring forms a regular nine sided polygon or nonagon, the inner is broadly circular although slightly irregular in places. The outer face of the ring is also faceted so in cross section is broadly D shaped. There is no bezel and the hoop is regular in width and section along its length. The hoop measures 21.8mm x 22.7mm, it is 2mm, 3.4mm thick, and weighs 2.17 grams. The internal diameter of the ring is 18.2mm x 18.5mm. There is no decoration present on either th…
