Cast copper alloy rim fragment of an early Late Medieval (c.1400-1500) chafing dish. It appears to be roughly rounded on top, the side becoming steeper towards the inside. The end of the rim is smooth and finished, suggesting this was the end of the dish rim. The rim has thin grooves on the inside and outside but is otherwise undecorated. The fragment has a dark grey with some green patina.
Chafing dishes were domestic utensils made of metal or earthenware for holding burning charcoal or other combustible material. This was then used for cooking or to keep food hot at the table, th…

An incomplete copper-alloy terminal from a post-medieval chafing dish of Lewis 1973 Type F. Flat-faced terminal in the form of a stylised human, possibly female, bust in profile with some details of hair, eye and neck engraved in a similar manner on both faces. A small round hole where a rivet or spindle would have fitted is blocked by iron corrosion. Weight 6.9gms Length 37.9mm. Width 14.1mm. Thickness 2.7mm. c.1575 - c.1650.

A fragment from the rim of a cast, copper alloy, turned vessel, most probably a chafing dish of late medieval or post medieval date (AD 1350-1650). The metal is grey, with some small patches of light green corrsoion, it has a smooth finish. The upper part of the vessel wall turns downwards slightly creating a flared opening. The rim consisting of a semi-circular bead that protrudes 1mm out beyond the upward facing surface.
