A probable corroded cast copper alloy casting jet or "gate". The object is roughly sub-trapezoidal in plan with a concave reverse and convex, domed top with two sub-rectangular sprue projections near the top. The surfaces are textured with pits from abrasion. This type of object is the result of casting into a mould and represents waste where molten bronze solidifies at the entrance of the mould around the gate and the casting channel/channels. Casting waste is difficult to date, and can potentially be prehistoric to post Medieval. The object may be Bronze Age in d…

Lead alloy casting waste of uncertain date; most probably post medieval (1500-1800 AD). This fragment is from the neck (funnel / well) of a composite, probably two part, mould. The casting waste is conical; being oval in plan and D shaped in cross section. In profile the edges of the waste taper relatively evenly. This conical well descends into a rectangular runner which has been clipped at the junction of the well. The fragment is heavily abraded and so evidence of casting seams are lost. The casting waste is a grey colour. Casting waste is very hard to date in isolation but the pat…

A large lead alloy spill of lead alloy of uncertain date or function - but most probably being of 17th century date and spill from casting - potentially lead alloy musket balls. The irregular splatter of lead measures 22cm length 18cm width and is 8cm high. It weighs approximately 6 kilograms. The upper side of the spill is flat and smooth whilst the underside is formed of tiny rivelets conjoined together. The area is well known for a 17th century / civil war seige - although the spill could be from building work / guttering water pipes of a similar or later period

A cast copper alloy fragment of casting waste. The artefact is difficult to date due to the nature of such finds - a proposed date somewhere between 50 - 1800 is suggested. The fragment is irregular in plan and profile . The upper surface has a number of globular like slag inclusions with a very open matrix. The Casting waste measures 41.6mm length, is 40.9mm wide and 13.5mm thick at the thickest point; it weighs 45.65 grams

An incomplete piece of copper alloy (bronze) casting waste of uncertain date; most probably Roman (AD50-350). However, due to the lack of context and the continuation of casting styles this artefact could be dated from Bronze Age - Roman period (c. 1500 BC - 450 AD). This fragment is from the neck (funnel / well) of a composite probably two part mould. The casting waste is broadly conical in shape although the wide edges are more heavily tapered than the sides. In profile the two halves of the casting waste are uneven with one side being much thicker and more wedge shaped than the oth…

An irregular casting sprue or jet of casting debris of unknown date - most probably later medieval - post medieval (1400-1800 AD). The jet is broadly rectangular in plan and irregular in section. The reverse face is flat; the front face has a raised longitudinal D shaped bar extending an projecting from one edge to the other; one terminal of this bar has a rounded boss. The lead is a mid grey colour and the patina is well formed. A specific date cannot be attributed but from the condition of the metalwork a very late medieval or post medieval date is preferred. A large fragment of lead alloy casting waste of medieval or early post medieval date. The casting waste is from the production of bi-convex spindle whorls and may represent the testing of one section of a two part mould. The fragment is irregular in plan and cross section; it comprises one half of the cast mould / design and a large tab of waste lead. The edges of the whorl are eroded and fresh unpatinated areas are present. The design on the upper face consists of a series of radiating spokes, within each panel are two pellets aligned vertically. The reverse face is irregular; a lar…

Two pieces of copper alloy industrial waste or slag, of probable Medieval dating (11th to 15th Century). 1: measures 47.4mm in length, 32.0mm wide and 9.7mm thick. It weighs 26.6 grams. 2: measures 12.9mm in length, 10.6mm wide and 5.5mm thick. It weighs 2.0 grams. Together both pieces weigh 28.7 grams. Both pieces are consistent with the waste produced as part of the copper smelting process, which did not significantly change from the Bronze Age through the Late Medieval period. However these fragments are more likely to be Medieval in date, as …

Lead alloy metal working waste of unknown date, probably post 1300 AD. The artefact consists of a lead plug from the top of a mould. Only a small fragment survives. It is irregular in plan with two sub-circular projections / jets present on the lower face. The two projections, although corroded and abraded show signs of the lower edges being clipped or trimmed, presumably to remove the cast object. Survival of artefacts similar to this is rare, mainly due to the nature of manufacture, with the waste being recycled shortly after production. A direct parallel has not been f…

An incomplete cast lead alloy (or possibley copper alloy with high tin content) artefact, of unknown post Roman date (50 - 1800AD). The object is most probably the sprue / casrting well from the vent of a mould and theerfore attributed to casting waste / casting by-product. The object is shaped like a four sided pyramid with rounded edges. It is undecorated and light grey in colour. Fragment of a copper alloy disc with a central hole. Underneath the artefact is flat until near the central hole where it tapers in. The top slopes gently up towards the central hole before tapering into it. The disc has a dark green patina with extensive patches of lighter green corrosion. It is likely that this represents casting waste rather than an artefact. A direct parralel has not been found - however it is similar to leaded bronzes used in the Roman and later medieval periods. It is possible this is associated with medieval metalworking - such as casting metal vessels Oute…
