A snapped tertiary debitage blade utilised as a burin / graver / awl of Mesolithic date (5000 - 3000 BC). The tool consists of the upper part of a snapped blade and the striking platform, bulb of percussion and bulbar scar are present on ventral face. Several flake removals are present on the dorsal face - including a distinct blade removal struck from a prepared striking platform on the lower edge of the snapped blade. This removal / burin spall has left an angular projection on the lower edge of the bladelet. This projection would then have been used to prepare bone and antler tools…

A burin of later Mesolithic date formed on a snapped mid grey mottled flint blade. The bulb of percussion and striking platform have been removed by snapping although the ventral face has clear evidence of chonciodal fracturing. The proximal snapped edge has been reworked with steep sided retouch creating a projecting point. This point has been made more angular by a deliberate vertical removal that has removed a small rectangular flake giving the point a specific identifiable profile. The rectangular notch at the mid point of the blade is a modern removal from movement in the soil. T…

Base of a later Mesolithic bladelet. The bladelet is formed on a mottled grey coloured flint with a small area of cortext on the dorsal face. the striking platform and bulb of percusion is present on the reverse face. The dorsal face has small areas of abrupt retouch on one edge. The deliberate break is old and patinated. The left hand corner of the break seems to have been knapped to form a burin / micro burin - with a distinct vertical removal and retouch on the opposite edge creating a projecting point. The bladlet measures 14.9mm length, 11.7mm width is 2.6mm thick and weighs 0…

A Mesolithic tool on a possibly broken bladelet; possibly a burin. In plan the burin is sub-rectagnular with the dorsal surface having three linear vertical scars, and the ventral surface having a flat surface as proximal end is missing, but this is not a recent break. The burin is triangular in section. One lateral edge has cortex remaining, the other has possible area of re-touch, but it is not fine and may be damage. The distal end is obliquely angled with the lower corner forming the possible tool section. The flint is of a mottled light grey to mid grey colour. It measures 13.94m…

A Mesolithic tool on a possibly broken bladelet; possibly a burin. In plan the burin is asymmetrical rectangule with the dorsal surface having two linear vertical scars, and a third smaller scar at the proximal end, which also has some re-touch on this surface which forms a blunt point. The ventral surface has a shallow bulb of percussion and ripples. The burin is triangular in section. The flint is of a mottled light grey/brown colour. It measures 19.99mm in length, 7.24mm in width, 1.37mm thick and weighs 0.1g. The possible burin dates to the Mesolithic period, (-8300 - -4500).

A Mesolithic flint tool possibly a burin. The flint is a pale cream in colour and is largely cortical. A spall appears to have been removed from the distal end, creating a point which may have been used for boring. However, it is possible that this spall removal is the result of accidental damage. There also appears to be an area of slight retouch along the right lateral edge, above the main area of cortex. The bulb of percussion is not visible, and it is quite possible that the flint has been snapped. The flint is sub-triangular in section. It measures 32.2 mm long, 10.9 mm wide, 7.1…

A Mesolithic flint waste blade, possibly retouched to form a burin. The flake has at least one burin spall removed from the distal end at the right edge, and there may be a further removal on the left edge. These removals may have formed a boring point, if they are not accidental. The ridge running down the centre of the flake appears also to have had some retouch, perhaps blunting the implement making it easier to hold. The tool measures 36.74 mm long, 10.00 mm wide, 7.41 mm thick and weighs 2.7 grams. It is a pale grey to white flint with brown and grey inclusions. It is triangular …

A Mesolithic flint tool on a flake, probably a burin. The flint is of pale to dark grey in colour and measures 27.2 mm in length, 8 mm in width and is 6.8 mm thick. It weighs 1.5 grams. The tool is triangular in section. The prepared striking platform is visible on the proximal end of the flake and there is invasive and abrupt retouch running down the left lateral edge (when held with dorsal side facing). This was presumably to facilitate comfortable use of the tool. Retouch around the distal end of the flake may relate to platform preparation prior to the removal of a spall in creatio…

A mesolithic flint burin on a flake. The striking platform and scars produced during cresting of the core are visible at the proximal end of the flint. The burin is at the distal end of the flake. It is likely that this flake was selected for use as a burin as it had accidentally formed a suitable shape for this tool type when struck, however there is evidence of retouch on the right side (when held with the dorsal side facing). There is also some retouch around the tip of the distal end, probably from cresting before removal of the burin spall. The left side of the flint (with dorsal …
