A cast copper alloy double looped buckle of post-medieval date (1550-1650). The buckle frame is complete and is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with a slight integrally cast central bar to which a pin would have been attached. The pin is lost but would have been attached to the central bar by the terminal being folded back upon itself. A notch is present on the internal edge of the left hand frame which would have acted as a pin rest. The frame of the buckle is decorated with a series of cast linear patterns at the mid point of the loop on both edges. The decoration is limited to the …

Loop from a medieval D shaped buckle. The loop is 45.3 mm wide by 23.1mm long. It is oval in cross section and tapers from 5.7mm across in the middle to 3.5 mm near one terminal and 3.4 mm at the other. One terminal has the stub of the axis bar which was very thin at 0.6mm. At the widest, central part is a shallow notch for the pin. A narrow raised band of linked rectangles on each side of the central notch to the terminals provides the only decoration. The color is brownish red, with green corrosion in places.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy D shaped buckle frame, probably dating to the late Medieval period (Late 13th to Early 14th Centuries). Approximately 25% of the buckle frame is present and consists of the upper half of the external edge of the frame. It is broadly D shaped in cross section. There appears to be an U shaped slot present, presumably the pin rest. The external edge is angled, with traces of gilding visible. The buckle frame fragment measures 22.35mm in length, 17.84mm in width, and 3.50mm thick. It weighs 1.9 grams. A buckle frame of a similar style …

A cast copper alloy single looped D shaped buckle of medieval date (c.1350 to 1450 AD). The buckle frame is broadly D shaped in plan, with a broad D shape cross section. At the centre of the frame, a single angular pointed projection with a U shaped notch as pin rest is present. The strap bar is off set. The pin and buckle plate are missing, presumably lost in antiquity. The buckle frame is a mid green colour with an even but slightly abraded patina covering all surfaces. The patina has been damaged in a few locations by abrasion in the plough soil. Th…

A cast copper alloy single looped D shaped buckle with a separate rectangular strap plate of medieval date (c.1350 to 1450 AD). The buckle frame is broadly D shaped in plan, with a broad D shape cross section. At the centre of the frame, a single angular pointed projection with a U shaped notch as pin rest is present. The strap bar is off set. Folded around the strap bar is a buckle plate formed from sheet metal. A centrally located slot has been cut into the buckle plate to allow the pin to pivot on the strap bar. The edges of the buckle plate have been offset to allow for the off…

Gilded copper-alloy buckle plate. The central part is rectangular, with two folded-under hinge loops along one long edge, both now broken (old breaks). Slightly more of one hinge loop is missing than the other. A narrow waist in the centre of the other long edge separates the central part from a terminal. This is symmmetrical, with each half consisting of a subrectangular centre with crescentic end projections; the effect is that of a cow-horn or moustache shape. The upper surface is decorated with a series of engraved diagonal lines converging on the waist of the buckle plate. Rows…

Late medieval copper alloy D-shaped buckle, with an offset bar, and angled exterior edge. Pin has a rounded point and consists of a cut sheet pin. The pin exhibits ridging on the lower side, along the exterior margins. The buckle measures 21.42mm in length, 16.82mm width, 6.57mm high, 1.64mm thick. The pin is 4.33mm wide and is 21.07mm long. It weighs 3.5 grams. The buckle is similar in style to that illustrated as Meols #484, p 88 and that illustrated as #274 in Egan & Pritchard 1991, p 42. It most likely dates from the late 13th to early 14th centuries. Refer…

Cast copper alloy double looped circular buckle of late medieval or post-medieval date (1450-1550). The frame of the buckle is broadly circular in plan with a cast central bar to which a sheet metal pin is fitted. One end of the pin is wrapped around the central bar; the other is tapered terminating in a blunted point. There is no evidence of the frame of a pin rest. The external edge of the buckle is faceted and indented forming a five petalled flower, the shape of the exterior of the frame is echoed by cast (or possibly incised) lateral panel in-filled with vertical lines. The reve…
