Post Medieval (1620-c. 1680) double-looped buckle: The copper alloy frame has two trapezoidal loops where the strap bar is the joined edge. The outside edge of one loop has two indentations to form three minor lobes. At the two corners of the outside edge of the other loop there is a curving arm which terminates with an expanded lobe. The other corner has its lobe missing. The pin is missing. The frame is reddish brown and has traces of a green patina. It measures 26mm long, 31.08mm wide, 1.49mm thick and weighs 2.67g. The frame is similar to illustrated examples in Whitehead (2003), …

Medieval copper alloy buckle of annular type and of mid-13th to mid-15th century date The buckle frame is circular (32.5mm external diameter, 24.7mm internal diameter and weighing 10.6g) and is of sub-circular section (3.7mm - 4.3mm diameter). Faceting on the inside of the frame may be the result of wear from a strap. There is no pin restriction on the frame. The pin is complete (with a length of 34.9mm) and has an open loop around the frame, now truncated and is narrowest at the rear of the loop, gradually widening towards the shaft (with a diameter of 9.1mm - 10.8mm and a width…

Cast copper alloy annular buckle (or possibly a 'ring' brooch) of medieval date (AD 1200-1400). The buckle is sub-circular (slightly oval) in plan with an irregular flattened oval cross section. There is no evidence for a constriction within the frame of the buckle to which a pin would fitted. There is also no evidence of a recessed pin rest on the frame. There is no evidence for any incised or applied decoration present on the frame of the buckle. The pin is complete and relatively large. It is attached to the buckle by a single loop which has been folded to secure the join. At the j…

Medieval copper alloy oval framed buckle with roller, probably of 14th or 15th century date The buckle frame is fragmentary, represented by the outside edge and part of the sides only (with a surviving length of 10.4mm, a surviving width of 23.2mm and a weight of 3.4g). The outside edge of the frame is ornate and is of circular section (6.0mm diameter at the ends). The centre is narrowed to accommodate a separate sheet copper alloy roller (10.2mm wide and 6.1mm diameter). The roller was enhanced with pairs of incised lines, now corroded and mostly lost. The sides of the frame were cu…

Two pieces of sheet copper alloy, possibly associated with strap plates for buckles of later medieval or post medieval date (AD 1300-1550). One of the sheets is rectangular in shape and has been rolled to form a U shape in section: There is no evidence of decoration present. The other sheet is D shaped in plan with a curved terminal that has been pierced by a single hole (diameter: 4.8mm); again there is no incised or applied decoration present. Both sheets are a mid green colour with an abraded patina. Direct parallels have not been found. The sheets measure: 14.4mm length, 23…

An incomplete post-medieval copper-alloy double-looped buckle dating to c. 1650-1720. What remains is one loop and the bar of frame. The buckle has cast floral decoration with a rosette at the centre of the outer edge of the loop (rose shaped knop) and sub-triangular protrusions at both ends of the narrowed pin bar in the form of moulded lis. The protrusions at the pin bar would have sat at the centre of pronouncedly incurved top and bottom edges. The frame is broad and thin with flat faces and rounded edges; the reverse is solid and flat. The buckle is brown in colour with remain…

Medieval (mid 14th to early 15th century) buckle: The copper alloy buckle has a D-shaped, almost circular frame with a fragment of an integral spacer. The frame, on the outer edge at the apex, has a small triangular integral protrusion as a notch for the pin. The upper surface of the frame is obliquely angled, whereas the reverse is flat. Opposite the notch there is a narrowed, circular sectioned bar which is for the pin, which is now missing. On the exterior edge of the frame, either side of the bar there is a slight protrusion with a broken edge. These are probably the traces of a f…

Medieval to Post Medieval (15th to 16th centuries) buckle: The copper alloy buckle frame, in plan, is a sub-'D' shape with a concave apex to the loop. This is intentional, rather than due to damage. The width and depth of the frame remains consistent and the strap bar is only slightly narrowed. The strap bar and frame is sub-rectangular in section. The frame, opposite the strap bar, is decorated with obliquely angled grooves. There is a fragment ofthe buckle plate wrap around the strap bar. The pin is missing. The surface of the frame has a shiny green/brown patina. It measures 18.35m…
