A near complete Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged flint arrowhead (2500-1500 BC) This arrowhead has been knapped from a pale brown / grey  coloured piece of flint. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section.  It is broadly symmetrical in shape with one barb and the tang being complete. The other barb is broken close to the body of the arrowhead by a clean break or snap. Both the long sides of the arrowhead have been retouched to create sharp edges.  Similar flint barb and tanged arrowheads are associated with the Beaker phase of the Late / f…

An incomplete tang / long barb from a late Neolithic oblique (British oblique) flint arrowhead. This arrowhead has been knapped from a pale mid grey coloured piece of flint. It is broadly rectangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The head of the arrowhead is lost through a modern break. The external long edge of the tang has been worked and shaped on only the dorsal face. The retouch applied is best described as scaled, short and semi-abrupt. Similar flint oblique arrowheads are associated with Grooved pottery of the later Neolithic 3000 - 2100 BC (Butler 2005: 158-160 after G…

It is broadly rectangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The head of the arrowhead is lost through a modern snap. The external long edge of the tang has been worked and shaped on both the ventral and dorsal faces. The retouch applied is best described as scaled, short and semi-abrupt. A probable complete handmade iron arrowhead of post conquest medieval date (1200 - 1300). The arrowhead is broadly sub-triangular in plan with a central spine which extends from the broken tip to a base of the socket. Two sub-triangular blades expand from either side of the spine; the base of these extend to form small triangular barbs. One blade is better preserved than the other. In cross section the arrowhead is broadly diamond (lozenge) shape with a prominent mid-rib. The arrowhead (without the socket) measures 48.9mm length, 15.9mm maximum width, and is 4.5mm thick. The socket is…

The triangular tip from an arrowhead of uncertain Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (3500 - 2100 BC). The tip is possibly from a barbed and tanged arrowhead - although due to the fragmentary nature of the flake it is difficult to be sure. The arrowhead has been formed on a tertiary flake of mottled mid grey white coloured flint. The external - triangular edges are neatly retouched with delecate rippled flaking. The dorsal face is heavily retouched with long parallel flake scars / removals - whilst the ventral has very small neat removals immediately on the edge. Generally both the ve…

A possible late Neolithic or early Bronze Age flint oblique arrowhead. The flint is roughly arrowhead shaped, and appears to have a possible barb and tang. However, these do not appear to have been deliberately fashioned through retouch, and the shape of the flint may be accidental. The dating and function of the flint is further called into question given that significant quantities of Mesolithic flints have been recovered from the same area. The tip of the flint is missing, and a difference between the patina at the break and the rest of the flint indicates that this break is relat…

A late Neolithic arrowhead probably of oblique or hollow-based type. There is bifacial invasive retouch down the left lateral edge (when held with dorsal side facing). The base appears to have been slightly hollowed with retouch to form very slight barbs. Some cortex remains on the dorsal surface. The flint is pale to dark grey with the cortex a sandy colour. The arrowhead measures 28.14 mm in length and tapers in width from 20.5 mm at the base to 2.4 mm at the point. It is lozengiform in section and is 5.1 mm thick. It resembles an example of an oblique arrowhead illustrated i…

Leaf shaped flint arrowhead (projectile point) of probable early Neolithic date (3000-2500 BC). The arrowhead is ‘kite-shaped’ in that it is broadly triangular in plan with graduated expanding edges from a pointed tip to a relatively flat – inturned base. In cross section the arrowhead is broadly lentoid. The arrowhead has been formed from a broad relatively thin blade, and the upper (dorsal) face has a series of longitudinal blade scars present suggesting that the blade had been removed from a relatively well worked core. The lower (ventral) face shows clear conchoidal fractures…

Leaf shaped flint arrowhead of probable Middle Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (2900 - 2150 BC). The arrowhead is sub-oval (tear-drop shaped) in plan and lentoid in cross section. It has been knapped from a light-mid grey translucent flint with a series of brown flecks within its matrix. It measures 37.3mm length, 16.9mm width, and is 5.3mm thick. It weighs 2.71 grams. Both faces (sides) have been pressure (ripple) flaked with small neat narrow facets. Much of this rippled surface has been flaked with skill. There is on large central bulbous hinge fracture in the centre of the arrow…

Leaf shaped flint arrowhead of probable Middle Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (2900 - 2150 BC). The arrowhead has been knapped from a light-mid brown translucent flint and is 42.8mm long, 18.1mm wide, and is 3.5mm thick. It weighs 2.72 grams. Both faces have been pressure (ripple) flaked with small neat narrow facets. The upper two thirds of both edges exhibit areas of secondary flaking or retouch. There are three areas of damage; the first is to the point of the arrowhead, the second is to one of the sides, and the third is to the base. None of these areas se…
