Heavily clipped and worn silver penny - most probably of Henry VI or Edward IV, dating from AD 1422-1483. Both legends are illegible, but the quatrefoil in the centre of the reverse cross confirms that the coin was struck at the episcopal mint in York. It is likely that this coin was of Episcopal issue either Sede Vacante or by Archbishop George Neville on behalf of Edward IV (Second reign, AD 1471-1483) due to remaining detail. A heavily clipper silver penny of either Edward IV from his second reign 1471-1483, or Richard III 1483-5 - struck at the mint in York. Type XXI 4. If this is the case then the coin would have been struck under the authority of Archbishop Thomas Rotherham (1480-1500). The inscription has been almost entirely removed and the identification is based solely on the marks by the breast and estimated size and style of the coin. Without an inscription it is hard to tell whether the coin was struck under Edward IV or Richard III reign. North: 1654 / 1686
