Rim sherd of a relatively thin walled coarseware pottery ‘Severn Valley’ vessel. The sherd dates to the Roman period (50 - 410), however, not enough of the sherd survives to be certain of the form or size and without this a more specific date is difficult. The rim has a swollen out-turned rim. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit and ironstone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a uniform mid orange colour.
A suggested diameter of the rim is 22cm, and the sherd represent…

The sherd dates to the Roman period (50 - 410), however, not enough of the sherd survives to be certain of the form or size and without this a more specific date is difficult. The rim has a stepped appearance; in that the side wall projects above the rim and the rim extends at an angle of 90 degree from the vessel wall. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz and grit inclusions; there are also a number of oval hollows suggesting the use of oolitic limestone which …

A sherd of earthenware pottery probably dating form the medieval period (1350 – 1500). It is likely that the sherd is from a domestic storage or cooking vessel. The fabric of the sherds is a relatively hard earthenware with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit, quartz, iron stone and burnt pottery inclusions. The fabric colour of this sherd is mid grey and the outer surface of the sherd is a mottled light orange colour. This two-tone effect has been caused by low temperatures within the kiln and is typical of early pottery. Due to the smallness of the sherd the diameter of …

Two abraded sherds of earthenware pottery probably dating to the later Medieval or early Post Medieval periods (1400 – 1550). Both sherds have a very decayed glaze present; this is a light yellow green colour and is probably a very decayed ‘Tudor’ green glaze. It is likely that both these sherds are from domestic pottery types such as jars or flagons. The fabric of both sherds is relatively soft and both exhibit a two tone (grey inner and orange outer) fabric colour. This two-tone effect has been caused by low temperatures within the kiln and is typical of pottery of this date. T…
