Roman to Medieval (1st to 15th centuries) spindle whorl: A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl which is sub-circular in plan and in profile is sub bi-convex. There is a central sub-circular perforation which is 10.05mm diameter. The surface of the spindle whorl is decorated; both faces have a pellet alternating with a ridge radiating from the perforation.
The surface is oxidised and is a cream colour.
It measures 31.28mm in diameter 13.45mm in thickness, the inner diameter measures 10.05mm and the object weighs 44.6g.
Spindle whorls, as an artefact type, can be hard to dat…

Roman to post medieval date (c. AD43-1600) lead pot mend: It consists of a broadly triangular piece of lead with a sub H-shaped section. The void on the edge has a fragment of ceramic material remaining with an oxidised orange-brown surface and a dark grey core. The lead has a thick white patina.
Lead pot mends were used throughout the Roman and medieval periods as a result these are extremely difficult to date unless dateable ceramic material survives with the repair. The ceramic material is too small to date.
The pot mend measures 36.29mm in length, 28.95mm maximum width, is 7…

An incomplete cast lead weight or steel yard weight.
The weight is sub-circular in plan. The top half is conical with the remains of an iron stud projecting from its apex, the bottom half is a shallow dome and there is a prononced lip where the two halves join. It is possible that the weight was suspended by this iron stud which is incomplete. The weight is a white to cream colour with a relatively even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina that covers all surfaces.
The small size and the conical nature suggest it was to be used with a steelyard and therefore be Roman in dat…

The object is a probable cast lead alloy spindle whorl. The dating of lead spindle whorls is difficult due to the long period of time over which they were used. According to Geake (Geake, H. 2001 Finds Recording Guide, Version 1.1; August 2001) lead spindle whorls have been found in both Roman and Medieval contexts (Geake 2001, 66). However the recorded object is thought to be Roman in date as it shares some similarities with another Roman spindle whorl from Woodhouse, Northumberland which is also bi-conical and has similar line and pellet decoration on it (Brailsford, J. 1951. Br…

Cast or wrought asymmetric lead or lead alloy die of probable Roman - Medieval date (43-1550 AD). The die is an irregular six sided cubical shape being sub-rectangular in both plan and profile. It measures 16.7mm in length, 17.4mm width, and is 10.6mm thick. The die weighs 23.26 grams.
On each face of the die is a single or series (one - six) of incised dots, some of which are enclosed by a ring (for example 6 and 3). These faces are arranged in an irregular pattern, unlike that of modern dice (where each opposite side adds up to 7). The dimensions of the faces are as follows, …
