A complete but slightly abraded cast lead alloy oval shaped seal matrix of medieval date (1200-1400). The seal matrix is sub-oval (oval with a single pointed lower edge) in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. On the reverse face of the seal is a projecting heavily D shaped lug which is not pierced - it is presumably via this that the seal was appled and removed from the waxen impression. From this lug a single pointed arrow descends which is bisected by a saltire cross - all formed from raised cast ridges and all of which are abraded. The design on the front face of the matrix …

A cast lead alloy seal matrix of medieval date (1200 - 1400 AD). The seal matrix was originally circular in plan however it has suffered abrasion in the soil and some distortion from movement having a dished profile. The front face is relatively flat and areas around the edge have been lost through abrasion and corrosion. The reverse face is plain and undecorated. It has an irregular projecting boss emanating from the top of the reverse. There is no suspension loop. The terminal end of this projection is rounded and its function was to enable the matrix to be lifted cleanly from the w…

Lead alloy pedestal / pendant seal matrix of medieval date (1250-1400). The die is roughly oval in plan and the reverse rises terminating in a broken - but probably triangular / lis shaped perforated loop. The body of the matrix is a hexagonal pedestal formed from six tapering sides and terminates in a series of moulded bands. The pierced loop extends above this. Each of the hexagonal sides is decorated by a vertical line of dots that descends the mid point of each panel. The body is also a matt grey cream colour possibly suggesting that the surface was originally tinned. There does n…

Cast lead alloy seal matrix of medieval date (1200 - 1400 AD). The seal matrix was originally circular in plan however it has suffered abrasion in the soil and some distortion from movement having a bowed profile. The front face is relatively flat, the lower half is partially lost due to abrasion and corrosion. The design and lettering is poor, second rate, being relatively poorly cut but relatively regularly spaced. The reverse face is decorated with a cast pattern, possibly either a debased fleur-de-lis or more stylised flower pattern. The design comprises two oval hoops from which…

A fragment from a cast lead alloy seal matrix of late medieval date (1200-1400). The fragment is irregular in plan - originally being a pointed oval / vesica-shape. The broken edges are all old and abraded and a light grey coloured corrosion product is present. The design on the front face is lost - the central element comprised a vertical hollow sided shape - possibly a vertical cross which is enclosed by a slight incised border which echos the shape of the seal. The inscription is similarly lost - from what survives the following letters can be seen: [...]RD [...] ENO [...]. In the …

Cast lead or lead alloy 'vesica' shaped seal matrix of medieval date (1200-1400). The seal matrix is sub-oval (oval with pointed ends) in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. It measures 32.1mm in length, 22.4mm width and is 4.3mm thick. The rear of the matrix has a vertical cast rib terminating in a small sub oval perforated projection or lug on its upper point. The lug measures 9.3mm in length, 3.8mm in width and it projects 1.6mm. The matrix weighs 11.93 grams. The overall condition of the matrix is poor as it has been badly abraded in the plough soil. This has led to much of …
