A heavily worn and eroded probable struck copper alloy jetton of later medieval date. Both faces of the coin are heaily worn and a light green polished shiny patina is present, both these factors make identifying the coin in more detail difficult. The obverse is almost completely lost and the identification is based on the partial renains of a lis termialled tripple stranded cross on the reverse. Such crosses are most often associated with Jettons struck in tournai during that later 14th and 15th centuries. Diameter 16.3mm. Thickness 1.5mm. Weight 3.9 grams

A heavily eroded and corroded struck copper alloy coin; most probably a Tournai style jetton of the later medieval period (1350-1450). The coin is too heavily worn to be identifiable and it is possible that it might in fact be a Roman As - although the thickness and what remains of teh surface do not 'feel' as if they date from this period. A copper alloy Nuremberg Jetton of Hans Schultes I (1553-1584) or Hans Schultes II (1586-1603). Due to condition and illegible inscription it is difficult to refine further. The coin may be a mule as the inital mark on the obverse - wedge - is attributed to Schultes I whereas the rosette on the reverse is - attributed to Schultes II. It is the recorders opinion that it is more likely to belong to the series struck by Hans Schultes II - based on the format of the inscription and if it is a mule it is likely to date from the earlier part of the period.

A poor heavily leaded copper alloy 'English Sterling' style Jetton made probably between 1280 - 1400. Sterling Head jettons were produced by people with access to the punches used for English coin dies. Presumably both dies and jettons were made by the Tower moneyers as a perquisite of the job (Mernick & Algar, 2001, in Saunders (ed), 'Salisbury Museum Medieval Catalogue Part 3', p218. Copper alloy Tournai Jetton, probably dating to the late medieval / early post medieval period 1497-1547. Both faces of the coin are encrusted with a concreted amalgam of earth and grit which cannot be removed. It is likely that this crust is a by-product of corrosion. The edges of the coin have also been badly abraded; this has removed some of the inscription around the edge of the token. Reference: Mitchener: 749 pp 242-244
