Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy fragment of casting waste. The artefact is difficult to date due to the nature of such finds - a proposed date somewhere between 50 - 1800 is suggested. The fragment is irregular in plan and profile . The upper surface has a number of globular like slag inclusions with a very open matrix. The Casting waste measures 41.6mm length, is 40.9mm wide and 13.5mm thick at the thickest point; it weighs 45.65 grams

Object type: PLAQUE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire

A cast copper alloy medieval enamelled and gilt heraldic mount or applique / plaque (1200-1350). The plaque is poorly preserved with the upper surface being heavily eroded and corroded. In shape the plaque is sub-triangular / shield shaped with the upper surface being slightly domed and edges faceted. The reverse is flat and undecorated and there is no evidence for any pierced or applied fixing points or suspension fittings. With this in mind it seems most likely that the plaque was either soldered or inlaid onto another artefact. The front face would originally have been enamelled and…

Object type: RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800). The ring is circular in plan and lentoid (hexagonal) in cross section. There are traces of irregular file marks on several surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. A slight thickening of the ring is present on one edge - this maybe remains of a casting jet. The ring is a dark - mid greenish grey colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. The patination of the metal would suggest a Medieval or later date. The function of the ring is varied (sacking ring, curtain ring etc) and…

An incomplete copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date (c. 16th century). The plate of the hook is flat backed and sub-rectangular. The attachment end is slightly rounded, and the plate then expands slightly along its length, until before the hook there is a cusped collar with a semicircular removal on each side, above which a smaller removal. The hook has been truncated, and there may be further damage to the attachment end. There is a central groove running the full length of the plate's front, faeturing two piercings for rivets, one of which still contains a rusted remnant …
