A fragment from the handle of a ceramic wheel thrown vessel of probable later medieval date (1350-1550). This fragment is part of a rod like handle from a jug. The hard fabric is smooth where the original surface exists, but coarse where the surface is damaged. It is likely that the surface has been burnished. The fragment is a dull orange (oxidised) colour with a grey (reduced) core revealed where abraded. The fabric is mica rich with large angular grog and coal measure grit inclusions. A frgament from the rim of a Roman vessel. The rounded rim is slightly thicker than the wall and turns outwards (everted). The hard fabric is red in colour through its thickness, and a grey burnished slip has been applied to both sides. The outer slip has fine circumfrential grooves (from burnishing), and on both sides are ocassional small pit marks in the slip, possibly caused by airpockets during manufacture. The overcooked nature of the fabric could indicate that it is a watsre or reject. The vessel had a 14cm radius at the rim, and this fragment is nearly 10% of the rim. The…
