Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic end scraper. The tool is formed from a primary flake, with abrubt retouch at the distal end. Some cortex remains to the left of the distal end of the tool, and at the proximal end at the striking platform. The bulb of percussion is clearly visible at the proximal end, and bulb scars are also visble at the point of impact. The flint used is a pale ochre in colour. The scraper measures 33.7 mm in length, 35.4 mm in width and 11 mm thick.

A Mesolithic flint blade. The blade is 41.6 mm in length, 16.6 mm wide and 4.9 mm thick. Negative scars on the dorsal face at the proximal end show where the core was abraded to produce a suitable striking platform. The bulb of percussion is clearly visible on the ventral surface at the proximal end. The blade is triangular in section. Very faint apparent retouch is discernible on the lateral edges, clearer on the left edge than the right (when held with the dorsal surface facing). As this retouch is not clearly defined it is possible that this is damage caused by utilisation of the bl…

A Mesolithic flint blade. The blade is 43.9 mm in length, 18.3 mm wide and 3.6 mm thick. Negative scars on the dorsal face at the proximal end show where the core was abraded to produce a suitable striking platform. A further likely striking platform at the distal end of the blade suggests that it was struck from a two-platform core. Intriguingly, there is evidence for burning at both distal and proximal ends. Given that the blade shows no evidence for having been burnt elsewhere this may represent evidence for heat treating of the core to aid knapping. The blade appears to have …

A Mesolithic flint artefact, probably a microdenticulate formed from a bladelet. The tool is 31.1 mm in length, 11.6 mm wide and 5.2 mm thick. It is sub-rectangular in shape and trapezoidal in section, with two ridges running towards the distal end from the striking platform. The ventral surface is relatively flat. Bifacial retouch has been applied to approximately two thirds of the right lateral edge (when held with dorsal surface facing). The retouch is limited to this area. It is this retouch, and the absence of retouch on the opposing edge, that suggests that the artefact shoul…

A Mesolithic flint microdenticulate on a bladelet with a possible burin at the distal end. The tool is 26.2 mm in length, 8.3 mm wide and 4.4 mm thick. It is sub-triangular in section. Abrasion scars are visible just below the striking platform on the dorsal surface where the core has been prepared. Immediately above the striking platform on the dorsal face there is a chunk missing, undercutting one of the dorsal ridges. This was probably caused during the initial striking of the blade from the core and does not appear to have been intentional. There is clear retouch to the rig…

The notch was created with a blow from the dorsal surface and followed up by retouch from the same side. There is also evidence for retouch at the distal end of the flake. A Mesolithic flint bladelet. The bladelet is broken, although whether by accident or design is uncertain. What appears to be retouch on the lateral edge and distal end of the bladelet may instead represent post-depositional damage, as these areas have a different patina to the break in the bladelet. The flint used has a grey colouration. The artefact measures 17.6 mm long, 6.8 mm wide, 2.8 mm thick and weighs 0.3 grams. It is trapezoidal in section.
