Cast copper alloy hooked sword belt mount of probable post medieval date (1600-1750 AD). The mount is irregular in plan being broadly oval with two sub-rectangular knops at either end. It is D shaped in cross section. The front of the mount has beveled edges and a convex profile. The hook is formed from a relatively thick D shaped projection which is bent back upon itself to create a U shaped hook. The hook has been broken approximately ¾ along its length. A copper-alloy mount of Roman date. This mount, which depicts a stylised lion's head, has several parallels on the PAS database - see, for example, ESS-902974 and BH-595E03. The nature of the fixings (see below) suggest it is probably a furniture escutcheon. A similar fitting, albeit from the handle of a metal vessel, was found in excavations at Verulamium (see Frere, 1972, fig. 43, no. 141) and the piece is also comparable to the smaller lion-headed casket mounts of the 1st century AD (see Borrill in Partridge, 1998, p. 320). The mount is umbonate in form (being oval in plan and D…

The mount is an irregular rectangular shape in plan with slightly waisted centre and expanded corners. It is a distorted rectangular shape in profile. The surviving original edges of the fitting are bevelled / faceted. The front face of the fitting is decorated with a simple border of small incised zig-zag lines created by a rocker arm technique. There is no evidence of a more elaborate incised internal design or a gilt or other applied surface. The plate is …

A heavily abraded, cast copper alloy mount of unknown date (50-1800) - most probably Medieval (1200-1450). The mount is incomplete, it compromises a relatively thin incomplete quatrefoil plate from which extends a large square sectioned bar that terminates in a turned knop. The upper plate has a saltire cross formed from cast depressions on the plate and the surface seems to have been originally gilded with a white metal. The edges of the plate are heavily abraded but seem to be scalloped. The projection on the reverse is substantial .A function apart from being a decorative mount can…

Cast copper alloy looped mount, possibly a furniture eschetcheon, of later post medieval or early modern date (1650-1800). In plan the mount is best described as pelta shaped, being formed from two oval lobes. In cross section the mount is sub-rectangular. The lower part of the front face of the mount is folded back upon itself to form a U shaped hook; however the upper part now broken seems to be rolled back upon itself to form a figure-of-eight. It is possible that the hook could have held a drawer handle or similar. The front face is decorated with a cast high relief design consist…

A cast copper alloy fleur de lis shaped mount, with a series of decorative lines on the upper face inlayed with either a blackened niello or silver wire. The mount probably dates to later 10th or 12th century AD (1000-1200 AD). The mount is 28.60mm in length, 20.13mm width and is 7.15mm thick. It weighs 9.3 grams. The mount is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with two projecting curvilinear spurs. It is D shaped in cross section. The overall design consists of a central spike with similar projecting spurs either side. This provides it with a fleur de lis or plum…

A cast lead alloy mount in the form of a stylished fish or dolphin. The dolphin has an arched back, with the slightly forked tail bending round to meet the back. This is very similar to Roman depictions of the dolphin. Under the head, it is flattened to form a basic base, it is possible that this area formed an attachment area to another object. The casting seam is visible on the internal curve of the arched back. It measures 48.63mm in length, 34.64mm height and is 11.64mm thick. It weighs 59.2 grams. There is currently still a degree of debate over the dating a…

Cast copper alloy zoomorphic mount or stud of medieval date (1200 - 1450 AD). The mount is broadly sub-triangular in plan being D shape in cross section. The front face of the mount is domed whilst the rear is relatively. From the centre of the rear face a small oval cross sectioned rivet or stud extends; this is broken and distorted / bent as a result of movement in the ploughsoil. The rivet seems to be present on the upper face of the mount as a badly abraded recess; this suggests that it is a two part mount rather than cast in one piece. The front face of the mount is decorate…

Cast copper alloy mount or stud of probable later early medieval or medieval date (700-1200 AD). The mount is incomplete being formed from a round disc like head with an integral cast fitting set at an angle of 90 degrees from the rear face of the mount. The end of this fitting is broken and so it is difficult to say whether it would have fitted into either a piece of furniture, book or harness. The head of the mount is broadly circular (although abraded and now irregular) in plan, it has bevelled edges and is slight D shaped in cross section. The front face is decorated with a wid…
