Sherd from either an urn or carinated jar of early medieval date (500 – 700AD). The sherd is broken and incomplete; the inner surface of the pot is lost due to a laminating fracture. What remains is much abraded. The upper surface of the sherd is decorated; the surface is burnished and a decorative pattern impressed. This pattern consists of a series of double horizontal parallel bands which have been formed by impressing the surface with a tool, the section of each grooved band is U shaped. Two areas of these double bands exist on the sherd. Between these two double bands are a seri…

Rim sherd of a relatively thin walled coarseware pottery ‘Severn Valley’ vessel. The sherd dates to the Roman period (50 - 410), however, not enough of the sherd survives to be certain of the form or size and without this a more specific date is difficult. The rim has a stepped appearance; in that the side wall projects above the rim and the rim extends at an angle of 90 degree from the vessel wall. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz and grit inclusions; there are also a number of oval hollows suggesting the use of oolitic limestone which …
