An incomplete copper alloy Colchester Derivative, Polden Hill type brooch dating to the Roman period (c. AD 75-175). The remains of the brooch consist of the head with wings complete but worn, and the partial bow. All other features are now missing. The reverse of the head is concave to accommodate the now missing spring mechanism. The brooch is incomplete, missing the spring and catch-plate (with a length of 58.0mm, a surviving depth of 23.5mm and a weight of 17.2g). The missing spring was secured around a central, pierced lug with the chord beneath and the rear of the head is concave. Copper alloy buckle or brooch. The artefact is broadly circular in plan with a constriction for the pin which is missing, the edges of the brooch are bevelled. There is a crude animal head which projects from the frame opposite the constriction, which depicts two eyes and a snout. The projection has a recess to hold the pin. The reverse is flat and undecorated. Length 1836.85mm, width 32.1mm, thickness 3.2mm, weight 6.5g. Compare Egan and Pritchard 1991, Dress Accessories p. 65 no 212.
