A similar fitting, albeit from the handle of a metal vessel, was found in excavations at Verulamium (see Frere, 1972, fig. 43, no. 141) and the piece is also comparable to the smaller lion-headed casket mounts of the 1st century AD (see Borrill in Partridge, 1998, p. 320). Cast copper alloy mount of probable Roman, medieval or post medieval date (50-400 AD/ 1300-1700 AD). The mount is a sinuous S shape in plan with a domed D-shaped cross section. There is no evidence of an applied or cast decorative surface. The reverse of the mount is slightly hollow with one central pin. This pin is broken; it has a square shaped cross-section. On the lower part of the mount, close to one edge, are several pits which are probably casting flaws / air bubbles. The mount is a mid green colour and has been abraded and rolled in the plough soil causing it to become slight…

Cast copper alloy zoomorphic or possible anthropomorphic mount or stud of medieval date (1200 - 1450 AD). A complete Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper alloy mount. This asymetrical mount is suboval in outline and is decorated in relief with a debased flower and a raised rim. On the rear is a central, integral spike that is square in cross section and tapes to a sharp point. The length and shape of this spike suggests this was a mount for a wooden object rather than a leather strap. The mount has a developing green patina with small patches of red residue suggesting it was originally tinned. The mount's face is 23.5mm by 14.7mm, and 1.7mm thick at the rim. The rear spike would of p…
