A Post Medieval silver sixpence of William III (AD 1694-1702). York mint dating to AD 1696 (Spink 3526). Spink (2000: 328).
Coin is extremely worn and appears to have been bent into and S-shape. Coins with such a double bend are not uncommon finds but their significance is not fully understood. According to Dr Kevin Leahy such 'Love tokens' were made using coins dating from the time of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) to the reign of Ann (1702-1714) with some Georgian examples. Silver gilt dress hook with a quatrefoil shaped plate decorated with filigree wire. The plate is divided into four roundels that are each defined by an applied twisted wire border. Inside each of the borders is a flat central knop surrounded by three twisted wire roundels, some of which are distorted.
On the reverse a reward facing rectangular loop (now flattened and distorted) is soldered to the top edge with a rewards facing hook soldered to the bottom edge.
