Cast copper alloy rowel spur. The neck of the spur is oval in cross-section and starts horizontally straight but tapers towards its downwardly bent rowel box. The rowel box is damaged and the rowel is missing but ferrous corrosion visible in the rowel box suggests that the rowel pin was iron. The horizontally straight sides, of flattened D-section, taper from the neck of the spur towards the terminals which are both formed by two rings set like a figure-of-eight equally above and below the front of the spur side. Copper-alloy press-moulded object, possibly dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. The surface of the object is curved and depicts two greyhound dogs, one standing up behind, and another lying down in front. Both appear to be on some sort of bed or sledge. The background is decorated with intricate swirls. The back of the object is filled with a type of mortar, making it relatively heavy, but this is probably something which has become attached to the object at a later date rather than serving an original function. The object may have been burnt. It is possible that the o…

It is likely that this token came from the open stone mould described in record HESH-E487F2. A number of these were found with the mould (HESH-E5ECA0, HESH-E61942, HESH-E639B8, HESH-E651C8, HESH-E65DF2, HESH-E67611). Also found with these items was some lead waste (HESH-0A0041)and a large lead cannon ball (HESH-0A8EC3). This group could be interpreted as a metalworkers or token makers assemblage with both used (and recycled) tokens as well as a large amount of lead awaiting to be melted down. Similar tokens are often found and are dated to the post-medieval periods (1500 - 1700 AD).
