Fragment from the butt end of a knapped, ground and polished axe head of probable later Neolithic date (2900-2100 BC). The axe is knapped from a mid grey volcanic tuff. This rock type is formed from compressed volcanic ash that is found in Britain in a band that runs from the Lake District (the Langdale's source Group VI), through North Wales (Graig Lwyd Group VII), and into Cornwall and Devon (Groups XVI and IV respectively). Volcanic tuff is similar to flint in that it can be flaked, ground and polished.
This fragment is irregular in plan and sub-oval in cross section. It measu…

An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Neolithic date (4500-2000 BC). The flake is irregular in form being broadly triangular in shape. The upper (dorsal) face has the remains of removal scars. The edges are slightly denticulaed but this is most likely due to movement in the ploughzone (plough bumble). The flake is very thin being a mid grey colour.
The flakes measures 17mm length, is 15mm wide and 2mm thick

An incomplete knapped and flaked flint knife blade / scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (3000-2000BC). The knife is formed on a flake of secondary debitage. The fragment is broadly oval in plan and has a D shaped cross section. The dorsal face has multiple flaking facets and the edges have been retouched with neat well organised overlapping flakes which can be described as invasive semi-abrupt and stepped. A small area of yellow cortex is present on the dorsal face and this is stained an orange colour by the environment. From this area of cortex relatively neat flake…

A large broad backed blade like flake of igneous stone - dolerite (grantite). The flake is broadly rectangular in shape and lentoid in cross section. In form the two long edges of the dorsal and ventral faces has been worked / knapped to form a very crude serrated edge. The retouch is crude and applied with a hard hammer. Likewise the flake seems to have been struck from a larger prepared core using a single blow from a hard hammer. One end is broken and patinated suggesting damage in antiquity.
Antiquaruian sources indicate that similar tools have been recovered from archaeologica…

A large knapped and flaked flint scraper of later Neolithic date (3000-2000BC). The scraper is unusual as it is formed from a large piece / flake of primary debitage. It seems to have been formed crudely and possibly discarded relatively swiftly; this is unusual in an area which has very small natural reserves of flint. The scraper / knife is broadly oval in plan and irregular in cross section. The ventral face suggests that it was struck using an uncontrolled blow which shattered the rock. Possible polished axe-head or model of an axe-head of later Neolithic (2900-2100 BC). There is a great amount of debate in the identification of this artefact. In shape and form it is very similar to known polished axes of the Neolithic period; however, it is formed from local fine grained mud / sandstone and is maybe better described as a naturally occurring axe-shaped nodule. The stone is too soft for tool production, hence a third and rather tenuous alternative interpretation as a potential model, in that it looks and would have acted as an axe in every way apart from being functio…

The flakes have a bulk weight: 16.43 grams

Eight flakes of tertiary debitage (waste from tool making) from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2000 BC). None of the flakes have exterior cortex on; many have multiple flake facets although none are reworked to form a tool. The colour and the quality of the flint varies, from a grey to brown colour. The majority is probably derived from glacial / riverine gravels.
The debitage has a bulk weight of 8.61 grams

Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Struck flint 'thumbnail' scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2900-1800 BC). The scraper is broadly oval in shape being formed from a relatively thick piece of flint; it is oval in cross section. It is likely that the flint represents reuse of debitage (waste flakes from tool making). The upper dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a large number of flake scars suggesting that this piece has been heavily worked / reworked. The ventral face is relatively flat with a series of parallel flake facets showing conchoidal ripples. The edges of the dorsal face have all be retouc…

Struck flint 'thumbnail' scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2900-1800 BC). The scraper is broadly oval in shape being formed from a relatively thick piece of flint; it is irregular in cross section. It is likely that the flint represents reuse of debitage (waste flakes from tool making). The upper dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a large number of flake scars suggesting that this piece has been heavily worked / reworked. The ventral face is relatively flat with conchoidal ripples and the remains of the bulb of percussion. The striking platform has been reworked. T…
