Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete leaf shaped flint arrowhead of probable earlier Neolithic date (4000 - 2700 BC) formed on a tertiary flake. The arrowhead is ogival / lentoid (a diamond shaped lozenge) in plan and lentoid in cross section. The arrowhead has been knapped from a mottled light-grey to brown flint which is opaque in places. Both faces of the flint show invasive, scaled, low angled retouch, with one face showing a slight scar, probably caused by a plough or similar machinery. The form is similar in shape to Green's Class 3B or 4B The arrowhead measures 26.5mm length, 14.9mm width, is 2.6mm t…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete pecked, ground, and polished stone axe / axehead of probable Neolithic date (3500-2100 BC). The axe is worked from a mid greenish grey coloured igneous rock, with large (between 0.5 and 3.5mm) black, grey, and white coloured angular inclusions. There are also a series of prominent black coloured veins that meander across the polished surface of the axe. The source of the stone is unknown - but it most resembles an Olavante dolerite. This rock could be knapped and worked in a similar way to flint to form tools. The axe is irregular in plan and broadly oval in cross secti…

A complete knapped, ground and polished flint axehead of later Neolithic date (2900-2100 BC). The axe is knapped from a mid grey coloured flint; a substantial mid milky white / pale grey surface patina is present. The grey colour of the flint is only visible through areas of modern damage. The axe head is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-oval (humped) in cross section. In plan the sides of the axe taper from the widest point at the cutting edge to a relatively wide but thin and rounded butt. Both long edges taper evenly and the axe is broadly symmetrical. The sides of the axe h…

Fragment from the butt end of a knapped, ground and polished axe head of probable later Neolithic date (2900-2100 BC). The axe is knapped from a mid grey volcanic tuff. This rock type is formed from compressed volcanic ash that is found in Britain in a band that runs from the Lake District (the Langdale's source Group VI), through North Wales (Graig Lwyd Group VII), and into Cornwall and Devon (Groups XVI and IV respectively). Volcanic tuff is similar to flint in that it can be flaked, ground and polished. This fragment is irregular in plan and sub-oval in cross section. It measu…
