A spindle whorl made from a circular cast lead medieval papal bulla of Pope Urban V (AD 1362-1370). The bulla has been deliberately defaced or reused by piercing/cutting a large circular perforation through the centre. The hole is irregular and positioned off centre, respecting the heads of Peter and Paul and the inscription above. Broken fragment from a cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably later medieval (1150-1600 AD). The spindle whorl is incomplete comprising approximately 1/2 of the artefact. The metal is heavily eroded and the break is possibly recent. The whorl is best described as being originally circular in plan and bi-convex in cross section. A complete cast lead medieval spindle whorl. It is biconical in shape, with a circular perforation in the centre. Both halves are decorated all the way round with straight vertical grooves that are closely spaced. The spindle whorl has an off-white patina. It is 22.5mm in diameter, and 16.1mm tall. The perforation is 9.6mm in diameter. It weighs 21.0g.

An incomplete, miscast of a Medieval lead spindle whorl. This artefact is sub-oval in plan, with a central piercing. The underneath is smooth, the upper side has a badly cast linear pattern. The whorl is grey in colour with a cream patina in its recesses. Its maximum diater is 37.2mm and maximum thickness 11.2mm. The hole is 6.2mm in diameter. It weighs 29.4g.

A complete cast lead alloy Medieval spindle whorl. It is biconical in shape, with a circular perforation in the centre. The spindle whorl is quite worn, but on one face there are the faint remains of a raised, chevron pattern from the centre to about 3mm above. The whorl is grey in color and lacks a patina, probably due to it being an alloy. It is 30mm in diameter, and 13mm high. The perforation is 10mm in diameter. It weighs 46.2 g.
